Los Angeles Angels vs Toronto Blue Jays MLB Odds & Picks
Written August 23, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Angels are coming off a 7-3 victory yesterday afternoon behind Vlad’s power and another good pitching performance by Ervin Santana who seems to be getting his game back. Today they play the rubber game of this series. LA has a nice lead in the division and is throwing a rookie out their to make his third career start. If this team was managed by anybody besides Mike Scioscia, I would expect a lazy game today but the halos know better, whether or not they’ll win, we will see. While most people will talk about how good Vladimir Guerrero is, how great lead off man Chone Figgins is and the superb fielding and hitting from star center fielder Torii Hunter (all these things being true), it has been Kendry Morales who is the teams MVP. Morales had a ton of pressure headed into this season as the guy that’s replacing Mark Teixeira. Kendry has responded by leading his team with 27 homers and 82 RBIs. He also hits .299 from the plate. You add guys like Erick Aybar, Juan Rivera and Bobby Abreu to the list of names mentioned above and you got one heck of a baseball team. On the mound today is rookie Trevor Bell. He is 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA in his first two starts. These numbers are not nearly enough of an example to give situational stats, what I can give you is that he is not a hard throwing pitcher and to me has been unimpressive. If the Halos are to win today’s game it will be due to an offensive out put. Another factor in this game will be the bullpen, while Toronto doesn’t post the best numbers they are superior to the Angels’ pen as it is embarrassing. Sunday’s MLB lines have the Blue Jays as -132 money line favorites over the Angels and the over/under set at 10 runs.
The Toronto Blue Jays look to get a mini victory today by taking the rubber game of this series against an American League powerhouse. This has been a very strange season for the Jays. They expected their two best and most dangerous bats to be center fielder Vernon Wells and right fielder Alex Rios. To sum up those two fellas, Wells has been terrible and Rios was claimed off waivers and now plays in Chicago (A). Aaron Hill and Adam Lind have been the one-two combo that has carried this team all season long. Hill has 29 home runs and 81 RBIs while hitting .290 and Lind has posted 25 homers and 79 RBIs with a .297 batting average. Marco Scutaro has been a very solid role player for this team playing a great shortstop and hitting well to boot. After Doc Halladay, the second best pitcher Toronto has to offer is young Ricky Romero.. On the season he is 10-5 with a 3.95 ERA. What excites me about Romero today is his numbers during day starts as hes gone 6-1 with a 2.98 ERA in eight day outings. Ricky will make his first career start against the Angels today so expect that also to be a major factor as their will be no familiarity of his stuff. Look for Adam Lind to play a big factor in the outcome of this rubber game and for Romero to pitch very well. The x-factor today for the Jays will be the bullpen. I fully expect Toronto to be up headed into the 7th inning, so if the pen shows up, the home team will win this game.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Angels are 17-4 in their last 21 games as an underdog. Toronto is 2-8 in their last 10 games overall.. The Under is 41-16-6 in the last 63 meeting overall between these two teams. What the first trend listed doesn’t include is a rookie pitcher making his third career start with an ERA of 5.91 verse a rookie starter who is 10-5 with an ERA under 4.00. I’ll take the home team today and I see it going Under the 10 runs.
