Baseball Odds & Picks: LA Angels at Seattle Mariners

Written April 15, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

angels-mariners-pick-041509The Angels enter this season with some new faces in key places. One of those key departures was the Halos record setting closer, Francisco Rodriguez. K-Rod, as they call him, started in their farm system and soon became one of the games top closers. Another big name is first baseman Mark Teixeira who signed for big bucks to go play for the Evil Empire, The New York Yankees. When their comes subtractions, addition always follows. The Angels added Bobby Abreu who is a multiple time all-star to a one year deal worth 5 million which is considered to be a bargain, weird to think, I know. They also are expecting big things out of their young players such as Howie Kendrick and new starting first baseman Kendry Morales. Bad Vlad Guerrero is still in place and Torii Hunter remains baseballs best fielding center fielder in the game. Their bullpen consists of seasoned veteran Scot Shields and free agent acquisition Brian Fuentes. On the mound tonight is a pitcher who continues to be over looked, Jered Weaver. Nobody would ever know it, but Weaver is a career 36-19 pitcher with a 3.66 ERA. He so often slips peoples minds due to the other arms LA has in John Lackey and Ervin Santana (when healthy). Last season Weaver was 2-1 in four starts against the Mariners. That was the most starts against a team all of last season for Jered. He had a 5.79 ERA but that is quite misleading as he bombed in one of those four starts. The key player in this game will be lead off man Chone Figgins who already has five stolen bases on the season.  The more Figgins gets on the more times Vlad, Abreu and Hunter get to the plate. Good team with a good line tonight the Angels are.  The MLB odds for tonight’s game show the Angels -126 against the Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners have opened the season with a 6-2 record. This amazes me considering I didn’t think the Mariners would get their sixth win until they were twenty games into the season. They have received timely hitting and surprise pitching performances from Erik Bedard and tonight’s starter Jarrod Washburn. This great start is also happening with their best player, Ichiro Suzuki out with a bleeding ulcer. Russell Branyan has really stepped it up so far with two home runs in the first week of the season one being a go ahead grand slam April 11th at Oakland. Tonight, Seattle faces a team in the Angels that they have not had much success against in the past. Washburn, looked like his old self in his debut this season getting the victory at Minnesota. Jarrod went 8 innings of scoreless baseball allowing only 5 hits and striking out 4 batters. Last season he has perhaps the worst year of his career going 5-14 with a 4.75 ERA. He started three games against LAA last season and lost all three. The Angels hit .330 as a team against him. Perhaps he is a different pitcher then he was last year, so those numbers may not be as crucial in this game. With that said, he has struggled against his foe tonight and the up start M’s will have their hands full with a very speedy and powerful line up.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Angels are 8-3 in their last 11 road games. The last nine times these two teams have met the Mariners are 2-7. Weaver looks to get a bit more run support tonight as his team is 3-7 in his last 10 starts on Wednesday games. Jered Weaver vs Jarrod Washburn, that edge goes to the Angels. the better fielding team as well as hitting team is also the Angels, the experience as well as the best manager in baseball also resides in Los Angeles as they will remind Seattle tonight that this division is theirs and the 6-2 start the M’s have had is nothing more then a fluke.

Jordan’s Pick: Angels -126

“the better fielding team as well as hitting team is also the Angels”

I’ll give you hitting, but fielding is definitely up for debate…

    glitch,

The M’s have journeymen and in experience at almsot every position you look. Not once cinsistent bat in the lineup with the exception of Beltre. Weaver does well against Seattle and Washburn does not do well against the Halos. Angels here
