Arizona 2009 NCAA Football Predictions
Written June 27, 2009 by InfoPlays
Mike stoops and company finally cleared a big hurdle last year, capturing a winning season and ending a nine-year bowl drought. It could have been even better, as they outscored their opponents by 15.3 points/game and all five of their losses came by 10 points or less. Now, which direction will the Arizona Wildcats go after beating BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl? Arizona’s season falls on the effectiveness of the new quarterback. The rest of the offensive pieces are in place, and the defense should be the best of the Stoops era with quality depth across the board. Arizona is listed at +20000 to win the 2010 BCS National Championship according to the most recent college football odds.
Offense: Arizona’s original plan was to copy Texas Tech’s passing attack, but that plan fell through. The Wildcats will continue to emerge as a running team, with the first passing reads going to junior tight end Rob Gronkowski. So far so good, as Arizona averaged 36.6 points/game and 402 yards a year ago. The Wildcats need either Matt Scott or Nick Foles to take over where QB Willie Tuitama left off last season. Scott, the backup a year ago, has a reputation for being more of a runner. Foles, who sat out after transferring from Michigan State, is a thrower.
Both will look for Gronkowski, who will likely be an early entry into the NFL Draft. He is a big red zone target, catching 16 touchdowns in the past two seasons. Coordinator Sonny Dykes visited the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason to study how they involve tight end Jason Witten. Lanky receivers Terrell Turner and Delashaun Dean provide downfield threats, while Nic Grigsby and Keola Antolin will handle the ground attack. The tandem combined for 1,700 yards and 23 touchdowns last season. Both are very quick through holes.

Defense: This could be the best defense in the Stoops era. The linebacker trio is touted as being better than advertised, the front line is developing quickly and an opportunistic secondary will make big plays when needed. Linebackers Xavier Kelly, Vuna Tuihalamaka and Sterling Lewis are not the biggest or the broadest, but they are quick and love to hit.
Defensive end Brooks Reed recorded eight sacks a year ago, while Earl Mitchell is a beast inside with explosiveness off the ball. UA’s line depth is easily the best it has been in over 5 years. Devin Ross has the speed and instincts to blanket the No. 1 receivers in the Pac-10. Trevin Wade gets a full-time job at corner after picking off four passes in limited duty last season. Cam Nelson switched from strong safety to free, with the goal of getting to more balls.
