Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks NFL Spread

Written October 18, 2009 by Black Widow

In a huge showdown in NFC West play, the 2-2 Arizona Cardinals travel to Seattle to tussle with the 2-3 Seahawks. With the division up for grabs, the winner of this contest will take the upper hand. Arizona beat Houston last week 28-21 to get back to .500 for the season, while Seattle made easy work of the Jacksonville Jaguars in a lopsided 41-0 home victory. NFL spreads are listed for Week 6, and they show Seattle -3 over Arizona with a Total Set of 46.5 points.

Matt Hasselbeck returned to the starting lineup last Sunday, and he gave the offense a big lift in their 41-0 shutout victory over the Jaguars. Hasselbeck started in a Week 1 win, 28-0, over the Rams, but he was injured in their Week 2 meeting with the 49ers. His broken rib appears to be healed, as Hasselbeck threw for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns last Sunday. The Seahawks’ starting QB needed a painkiller shot directly into his fractures to be able to play against Jacksonville, so he still isn’t fully recovered. Seattle is battling injury problems again this year, as seven starters missed action last week. Brandon Frye, Walter Jones and Sean Locklear, all who are starters, are expected to be out Sunday against the Cardinals. Hasselbeck’s gutty performance shows that this team is a lot tougher this season, and he has helped spread that mentality to the rest of his teammates. T.J. Houshmanzadeh and Nate Burleson each caught 2 TD passes from Hasselbeck last week, and the receiving corps is one of the best in the league provided the offensive line can give their QB time to find them.

The Arizona Cardinals are a tale of two stories defensively. They own the #1 ranked rushing defense at 71.0 yards/game, but their passing defense ranks dead last in the NFL at 303.0 yards/game. They overcame 371 passing yards from Matt Schaub last week to earn a big 28-21 home win over the Houston Texans. The Cardinals had a hard time closing it out after taking a 21-0 lead, giving up 21 unanswered points to Schaub and company. But Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie intercepted a pass from Schaub and returned it for the game-winning score with just a few minutes remaining. The defense also preserved the win by providing a goal-line stand in the closing seconds. After finishing as the #3 ranked scoring offense last season at 26.7 points/game, the Cardinals have dropped to 14th in the league in 2009 at 22.3 points/game. Kurt Warner has been solid again this season, coming off a 26-of-38 performance against the Texans with 302 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. But Arizona is struggling to run the football again, and they’ll need more balance if they are to win Sunday. Arizona went 2-0 against Seattle last year, with Warner throwing for 658 yards and 5 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions in the two victories. Hasselbeck missed one of those games, but threw 3 interceptions in the other. The Cardinals had lost 5 straight at Qwest Field before coming away with a 26-20 road victory over the Seahawks in 2008.
