Arizona vs Oregon State College Football Odds
Written September 24, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Two Pac-10 foes will open up conference play this weekend as Mike Stoops and the Arizona Wildcats travel to Corvallis, OR to battle the Oregon State Beavers. Both teams are coming off of tough losses and look to right the ship with a win. Arizona will be competing in one of the tougher venues of college football for the second week in a row after falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes last weekend. Oregon State took on a talented Cincinnati Bearcat team and eventually fell 28-18 after a late touchdown pass from Bearcat QB Tony Pike. Looking at the latest NCAA football odds, the Beavers are now 3 point home favorites, with the total listed at 44 points.
A quarterback controversy is not something you ideally want to have when opening up Pac-10 play, but there is no avoiding it in Arizona. QB Mike Scott was ineffective against Iowa completing 4 of 14 passes for 50 yards and an interception. Scott was pulled late in the second half in favor of sophomore Nick Foles who eventually led the Wildcats to their only offensive touchdown of the game. The two have contrasting styles as Scott is more of a running quarterback and Foles is a pocket passer with a big arm so it will be interesting to see who the Cats decide to go with against the Beavers. RB Nic Grigsby is still the teams most potent offensive weapon but only carried the ball 11 times for 75 yards in the loss against Iowa. They will have to find a way to get him the ball more often as he is one of the more electrifying players in college football with the ball in his hands. Arizona’s defense has been solid all year and their secondary is the strength of the team. This unit will have to find a way to contain Oregon State’s jitter-bug back Jacquizz Rodgers. Mike Riley consistently has Oregon State playing in and winning bowl games each year even though his teams don’t recruit the players sought after by the major programs. The Beavers are off to a 2-1 start this season behind QB Sean Canfield and RB Jacquizz Rodgers. Canfield is second in the Pac-10 in passing throwing for 240 yards per game and Rodgers is one of the top backs in the country rushing for 342 yards and five scores in three games. The sophomore running back has been battling an ankle injury and left the game early against Cincinnati. Running responsibilities went from ones Rodgers to another Rodgers as Jacquizz’s brother James stepped in and carried the ball the rest of the way. Oregon State has won two of their first three games with a balanced offensive attack and ball possession turning the ball over only once in 12 quarters. Riley’s squad stole a victory in Tuscon, Arizona last November making a 24 yard field goal as the clock hit zero to win 19-17.
The Wildcats are in a brutal stretch of their season going on the road for three straight games against quality opponents. Oregon State has won the last three in this series and nine of the last 10. OSU has struggled in conference openers, however, losing their last five. Arizona’s quarterback situation is un-steady and TE Rob Gronkowski is still suffering from a strained back. Gronkowski’s absent was evident in the game against Iowa. If Jacquizz Rodgers is green lighted for this game, take the Beavers on the money line.
