Arizona State 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 28, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Arizona State Football PredictionsThe Sun Devils should have one of the best defenses in the Pac-10 this season. But that won’t matter is a quarterback can’t sustain some drives and put points on the board. ASU heads into the season lacking playmakers at quarterback, tailback and tight end. This is unusual considering the Sun Devils have been one of the most prolific offenses in the Pac-10 for years. Good defense, but a questionable offense will make it hard to wind up with a winning season at ASU. College football odds have the Sun Devils listed at +2000 to win the Pac-10 Title in 2009.

Offense: Quarterback Rudy Carpenter started 43 consecutive games, with hardly anyone else taking a meaningful snap over the past three-plus seasons. Now, it’s Danny Sullivan’s turn. The senior has sat and waited for this opportunity. He says he’s ready, but completed just 15 of 43 passes a year ago as the backup and he has to prove he can get the job done once the games begin. Mobile QB Samson Szakacsy and freshman Brock Osweiler will challenge Sullivan. Whoever winds up under center could use some help staying on their feet. ASU’s 34 sacks allowed in 2008 was a huge improvement on the 55 allowed in ‘07, but it was still way too many.

The line has seen an implement of taller, more physical players. Tackle Shawn Lauvao could play on most anybody’s line, he’s that good. Garth Gerhart won the starting center job on the spring. His mobility and understanding of the offense has him in good shape. Partly because of poor line play, the running game ranked 113th nationally last year, averaging just 89 yards/game. Dimitri Nance is a powerful runner and sophomore Ryan Bass has the speed to make a nice 1-2 punch. Receivers Chris McGaha, Kerry Taylor and Kyle Williams make up a trio of sure hands, speed and explosiveness on the outside.

Defense: The Arizona State Sun Devils have been noted for their offense over the years, but they are starting to change gears. It’s about to get after it on defense. Two of the top front-line players in the Pac-10 are back in end Dexter Davis and sophomore tackle Lawrence Guy. Davis is a pass-rushing specialist and is the only player in the country to have posted back-to-back double-digit sack seasons. Guy made 44 tackles in the middle last season, including 10 for a loss. James Brooks is an up-and-coming sophomore end who should take advantage of all the blocking attention paid to Davis.

ASU goes eight or nine deep at the linebacker position. Mike Nixon serves as the catalyst at 25 years of age, and he showed his playmaking ability with five interceptions last season. Cornerback Omar Bolden is not afraid of contact and he’s physical enough to win most of the battles. Terell Carr has 4.4-speed at the other corner. Ryan McFoy is considered a ball magnet at strong safety. Clint Floyd will get the nod at free safety, and these two are very quick and capable of getting the job done as roamers in the secondary.
