Arizona State at Washington

This Saturday the Arizona State Sun Devils will head to Husky Stadium to take on the Washington Huskies in a Pac-10 showdown. The Huskies are coming off a dramatic 32-31 win at USC last week, while the Sun Devils dropped their third straight, losing 31-28 at Oregon State. Despite the 2-3 record the Sun Devils have to feel pretty confident against Washington, as they have won six straight against the Huskies, including a last second win at home in 2009. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend, the current odds have the Huskies favored by 2.5-points over the Sun Devils at home.

Arizona State (2-3, 0-2 Pac-10): Things just aren’t going Arizona States way the past few games, as they have lost their last three by a combined 15 points. The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 7-0 lead against Oregon State, but trailed 24-14 by the end of the first half. They got it within four early in the fourth quarter of a 25 yard field goal by Thomas Weber, but on the very next possession the defense allowed Jacquizz Rodgers to run 74 yards for a score. The Sun Devils pulled it within three with a late touchdown, and got the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead, but quarterback Steven Threet threw his third interception of the game to end their chance of a comeback.

The Sun Devils outgained the Beavers 416 to 364, but the three turnovers really killed them in this game. Threet finished with 203 yards on 14 of 29 passing with only one touchdown. The Sun Devils got a nice game out of running backs Deantre Lewis and Cameron Marshall, as the two combined for 174 yards and two scores. The defense has really struggled against the pass this season, allowing 228 yards a game, and they are going to definitely be tested in the air by Washington quarterback Jake Locker, who has the Huskies averaging 235 yards a game passing.

Washington (2-2, 1-0 Pac-10): The win against USC last week was the Huskies first road win since 2007, as they went without a win away from home in both 2008 and 2009, and started the 2010 season with a loss at BYU. The Huskies got a big time performance out of Locker last week, as he completed 24 of 40 attempts for 301 yards and score, and added another 110 yards on 12 carries on the ground. Not only does the win bring Washington to 2-2 on the season, but it could be just what this team needed to really put together a strong finish.

The only problem is the offense has to put up a ton of points just to have a chance, as the defense has played horrible all season. Last week they gave up 484 yards of total offense to the Trojans, including 298 yards on the ground. With the defense struggling, it will be up to Locker and company to come out firing in front of the home fans for the Huskies to improve to 2-0 in the conference.

Looking at the Odds: Even after the impressive win on the road at USC last week, I think the smart bet is on the Sun Devils +2.5 in this game. I just don’t think the defense is going to be able to stop Arizona State from putting up huge numbers in this game. The Sun Devils have really killed themselves with turnovers this season, as they have 13 in the first five games, but Washington has forced just four all season. I have Arizona State winning in a shootout, as my final score prediction is Arizona State 35, Washington 31.
