Arkansas College Football Predictions 2009
Written June 15, 2009 by InfoPlays
There are plenty of personnel questions, but the team seemed to settle in all right in Bobby Petrino’s first year on the job. Now in his second year, they will have to continue making adjustments to his style from the spring into the fall. The Hogs showed their potential with an upset of LSU last season and they have the returning experience to make more noise this season. Swapping Texas for Texas A&M in the non-conference schedule improves at least one game from near-certain defeat to tossup, and that could help Arkansas get back into bowl contention. According to the college football odds, the Razorbacks are at +9000 to win the NCAA Championship.
Offense: Fans are dreaming of big passes this season since bringing in new quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Tyler Wilson. These two young talents will be throwing the ball to tight end D.J. Williams and wide receivers Jarius Wright, Joe Adams and London Crawford. Mallet, a sophomore transfer from Michigan, impressed coaches with his big arm and ability to throw the deep ball. But Wilson was better in scrimmages during the spring, including the spring game. Coaches continuously avoid talk of quarterback controversy. They like to call it depth.
There should be depth at tailback too. 1,000-yard rusher Michael Smith must return healthy. Injuries cost Dennis Johnosn, Brandon Barnett and freshman Knile Davis all or most of spring. The Arkansas Razorbacks are eagerly awaiting the arrival of touted freshman Ronnie Wingo. Wright and Adams, both sophomores, were explosive all spring. Crawford caught last year’s game-winner against LSU, and Reggie Fish has some moments, too. Williams is the most reliable receiver of them all. He has improved his blocking to become tougher in the trenches. Wade Grayson moved from guard to center to replace All-American Jonathan Luigs. DeMarcus Love from from guard to tackle. Mitch Petrus moved back to starting guard like he did in 2007 after being ineligible in ‘08.

Defense: Ends Adrian Davis and Jake Bequette and reserve Damario Ambrose and senior tackle Malcolm Sheppard are the strength of a defense that has nowhere to go but up. Sheppard was most effective when coaches fitted the defense to him. They turned him loose instead of asking him to read things, thus causing more havoc on opposing offenses.
Starting linebackers Jerry Franklin, Wendel Davis and Freddy Burton all return, with sophomore Bret Harris set to challenge Burton. Newcomers must add depth at linebacker. The secondary is up in the air. Newcomers in freshmen corners Darius Winston and David Gordon, along with junior college safeties Antony Leon and Rudell Crim, could become starters in the secondary. Corners Issac Madison and Ramon Broadway posted solid springs.
