Army vs. Navy College Football Odds

Written December 9, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

Though they aren’t two of the top teams in the country the rivalry between the Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen is second to none in many ways. Off the field these two are allies, but when they get on the field they play one of the hardest hitting football games of the entire college football season. Navy has won the rivalry seven years in a row, so Army really wants to win one badly. Army is a much improved team this season, but Navy is a very formidable foe. The Navy Midshipmen will be going bowling again this season, where they will play in the Texas Bowl against Missouri. The Naval Academy football program has improved drastically over the last few years and their option offense causes almost every defense they play some significant problems. Ricky Dobbs is the junior quarterback for Navy, but he has only put the ball in the air a total of 84 times this season. Dobbs can throw the ball if absolutely necessary, but he is primarily an excellent runner who makes wise choices with the triple option attack. Dobbs has 23 touchdowns on the ground this season. Vince Murray is the running back with the most yards for Navy and Murray averages 5.6 yards per carry on the season. Five players have at least 50 carries on the season, so plenty of people run the football in this offense. The Navy defense is average, allowing 21 points per game and 346 yards per game. They are sometimes susceptible to teams that can throw the ball very well.

The Army Black Knights had been a terrible team over the past few years, but this year they have been a much more competitive team. Army is 5-6 and with a win over Navy they would be headed to the Eagle Bank Bowl. Trent Steelman is the freshman signal caller for the Army team, but he is definitely another running quarterback who only throws on rare occasions. Steelman has 191 rushes and just 90 pass attempts on the season thus far, but he has done well taking care of the ball in his first season under center for the Black Knights. Patrick Mealy and Kingsley Ehie are the other two main running options for Army, Mealy averages 6.4 yards per carry and Ehie 4.2. The Black Knights are probably most improved on the defensive side of the football. The defense, which had been a weak spot, has kept them in most games this year and allows just 311 total yards per game. The bad news is they have been suspect against very good rushing attacks, which could hurt them a lot in this one if they don’t shore that up.

The college football betting lines show Navy a 14 point favorite in this classic rivalry game. The posted total is set at 41 points. When making football predictions on this game remember that Navy is 6-1 against the spread in the last 7 against Army, but this Army team is definitely better than they have been in the last few years.

If you like to watch teams run the triple option you should definitely tune into this game! There will be a whole lot of running going on and very little passing. The team that can successfully stop the run consistently will come out ahead in this one.
