MLB Odds & Picks: Oakland A’s vs Detroit Tigers
Written August 22, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
Fresh off another great pitching performance by Edwin Jackson, the Tigers head into the second game of this series after taking game one last night 3-2. Ryan Raburn was the man of the night hitting two home runs and was no doubt the player of the game. Detroit stands 3.5 games ahead of the White So in the AL Central race. To look ahead even more, this a team that is being vastly under valued. All the critics throw out the Yankees, Angels and Red So as the contenders to win the ALCS, I’d say its about time the Tigers join that mix. With bats like Miguel Cabrera, Curtis Granderson, Aubrey Huff and Magglio Ordonez, that gives them the ability to have big nights from the plate and the chance of comeback victories if needed. Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson are a very scary 1-2 combo and will be dangerous if this team gets in. Onto to tonight’s game, Armando Galarraga gets the start and is 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA this season. His road numbers have been terrible, he is 2-6 with a 5.97 ERA in 10 away starts. Armando has also had his night starts look more like nightmares posting a 2-9 record and 5.25 ERA to boot. In two starts against the Athletics this season he is 1-0 with an ERA of 7.71. Look for him to be decent at best tonight. In order for them to win this game it will need to be high scoring. Saturday’s MLB odds show the A’s -105 against the Tigers with the total set at 8.5 runs.
The Oakland Athletics lost a close one last night 3-2 to Detroit dropping the first game of the series. They got a solid outing from Gio Gonzalez who kept his team in striking distance. Oakland has now lost three games in a row and are starting to see the pitfall of trading your two best offensive weapons. Jack Cust had three hits last night and an RBI but it was not enough to get his team a victory. Spark-plug center fielder Rajai Davis added two hits and has been perhaps the sole bight light since the break. Tonight Trevor Cahill starts for the Athletics, his record and ERA he has posted to date does not nearly state clearly how good this kid is. Cahill is 6-12 with a 4.97 ERA this season. He is coming off two great starts against Chicago and Baltimore. He has the worst start of his career against Detroit earlier in the season going 2.1 innings getting blasted for 7 runs on 7 hits. So with his season numbers, stats against the Tigers and his 5.71 ERA since the all-star break, you are probably thinking right about now “why is this guy praising this kid who has got knocked around so often”. Very simple, he has live stuff, throws hard and has movement on his pitches. A striking similarity to Dan Haren when he was just a young pitcher on Oakland himself. Picks below, go with them, they are good.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Tigers are 6-2 in their last eight games as the favorite. The Oakland Athletics are 2-6 in their last eight home games. The A’s are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings against the Tigers at home. DO NOT GET TRAPPED. The bookmakers are trying to lure you in to take Detroit here with a very low road line. Cahill will come out tonight with 6-7 strong innings. I have been in the business way to long, this is a tailor made home team victory.
Jordan’s Free Picks: Oakland Athletics -105 & Under 8.5 (-105)
Jordan’s Premium Picks:Â Another interesting night on the diamond. We went 1-2 on the premium plays but 2-0 on the free play side. The Red Sox got slammed while the Phillies behind overrated starter Cole Hamels fell to the Mets. The Cubbies came through on the RL and we hit both Detroit and the Under. Tonight I have perhaps the most confident plays going of the second half. My ****4 Star**** play is discounted to $19.95 and is guaranteed as are all my other plays today. Enjoy.
