Baseball Betting Lines: A’s vs Dodgers

Written June 17, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

athletics-dodgers-preview-061709The Athletics are 27-36 on the season which is not pleasing to their owner due to the moves he has made to try and revamp this team. With trade talks in the air for almost all of their veteran players, it seems to be distracting just a bit. Oakland has now lost four in a row and have scored only seven runs in those four games combined. Matt Holliday has eight home runs, 37 RBIs and is hitting .275 on the season. Those numbers for a player of his caliber are below average. Jason Giambi has nine homers and 34 RBIs while the team leader in homers is Jack Cust with 11 while adding 34 RBIs. Orlando Cabrera has been a colossal bust while promising young catcher Kurt Suzuki has looked marginal at best. So it is safe to say the A’s will be moving some players. One of those guys, will certainly not be Trevor Cahill. The rookie at times has looked dominant and at other times has looked, well, like a rookie. He is 3-5 with a 4.17 ERA. However, on the road he has struggled with a 5.18 ERA. During June he has started three games so far going 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA. So you will have your ups and downs like you do with almost all rookies, but tonight, expect a very good performance from the kid.  Today’s baseball odds show the Dodgers -158 against the A’s with the over/under at 7.5 runs.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are 43-22 and if you ask me, I’d wave bye bye to convicted steroid user Manny Ramirez and move on. Juan Pierre has been great hitting .333 on the year while Matt Kemp and James Loney seemed to really have picked up the slack. Andre Ethier continues to be the clutch guy and Orlando Hudson is the grit and fight in this team. Russell Martin is a top five catcher in baseball as well along with Rafael Furcal who is a top tier short stop. LA is a contender without Ramirez. Single stats are not needed here as this is a well balanced attack of hitters. On the mound tonight will be Hiroki Kuroda. Coming off an Injury, Kuroda has been solid. He got hit a little in his last start at Philly, but to be honest, every body has been hit that has faced the Phillies this year just about. His 1-2 record is an indication of low run support as his 2.86 ERA shows his effectiveness. In his two starts at home his ERA is 1.64. Expect him to pitch well tonight but he might just get clipped by a solid young rookie. James Loney will be key as his left handed power bat will be a test for Trevor Cahill.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: Oakland is 23-51 in their last 74 road games. The UNDER is 6-2-1 in their last nine road games. The UNDER is 11-3 in the last 14 interleague games played in LA. The UNDER is also 8-2 in LA in the last 10 games when the Dodgers follow a win. I am all over the UNDER tonight as well. The pitching is solid, both defenses are legit and the park is big. I am also however putting a small play on the A’s as the bang for your buck is nice there.. The Dodgers are the most bet team overall by the general public tonight. Watch out, don’t be fooled.

Jordan’s Picks: Oakland A’s/Los Angeles Dodgers UNDER 7.5 (-120) & Athletics +148

Wow, talk about a bad break. As we hit the Rays underdog special, we watch the Braves terrible Closer Mike Gonzalez give up a four spot in the bottom of the eighth which gave the Reds a 7-2 lead and ruined our UNDER 8 BEST BET.. 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth we looked golden, wasn’t meant to be last night. We are ready with a great play tonight on the Mets/O’s OVER.
