Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers NFL Lines

Written November 15, 2009 by Black Widow

The 5-3 Atlanta Falcons visit the 3-5 Carolina Panthers in this NFC South match-up Sunday. The Falcons are off a 31-17 home win over Washington, while the Panthers are off a 20-30 road loss at New Orleans. This is the second meeting between these teams this season, with the Falcons winning the first meeting 28-20 at home. Check out the NFL lines on this contest where they have the Falcons as 1.5-point favorites over Carolina with a Total Set of 43.5 points.

Atlanta is 1-3 on the road this season, where Matt Ryan has thrown 5 interceptions in his last two road games. This team is undefeated at home, but it has been a much different story when they hit the road. Ryan has really struggled over his last 3 games, with four touchdowns to six interceptions while completing just 54.5% of his passes. He was efficient in their 31-17 win over the Redskins last week, completing 17-of-24 passes for 135 yards. He didn’t need to do much as Michael Turner carried the load for a second consecutive week, rushing for 166 yards and two touchdowns against Washington. That came after his 150-yard effort against the Saints on just 20 carries. Turner has now scored touchdowns in 7 straight games, leading the NFC with 10 rushing touchdowns on the season.

The Carolina Panthers have even worse QB problems, though Jake Delhomme has cut back on his mistakes the last few weeks. Still, Delhomme has 5 touchdowns to 13 interceptions this season. He did avoid throwing a pick against the Saints last week, where he threw for 201 yards in their 20-30 loss. The Panthers were in that game the entire way, and actually led 17-6 at halftime. But New Orleans turned it on in the second half, outscoring Carolina 24-3 the rest of the way. Both teams will be relying heavily on their running games in this one, especially Carolina behind the two-headed attack of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Over the last 4 weeks, Williams leads all rushers with 548 yards. In their first meeting, Williams was held to 79 yards in 16 carries, but expect DeAngelo to get more touches this week. Atlanta ranks 24th in the league against the run. In his last 7 meetings with Atlanta, Delhomme has 10 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions, and he threw for 301 yards and one touchdown to three interceptions in their earlier September meeting. Matt Ryan threw for 3 touchdowns in the win.
