Atlanta Falcons Odds to Win 2011 Super Bowl

After winning the NFC South and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, you will find the Atlanta Falcons at +500 to win Super Bowl XLV. The Falcons went 13-3 this season and 5-1 in the South division and the road to the Super Bowl in the NFC now goes through the Georgia Dome. Atlanta did not clinch the top seed or a first-round bye until the final week of the season, but came through with a dominant 31-10 home victory over the Carolina Panthers. This team is set up to make a deep run in the playoffs as long as they can continue playing like they did during the regular season.
After a decent 4-2 start this year, the Falcons went on to reel off eight straight victories before losing their first home game of the season to the New Orleans Saints in Week 16. Atlanta went 7-1 at home this year and clearly have one of the best home-field advantages in the game today. In fact, since Matt Ryan was drafted in 2008 he has compiled a 20-2 home mark for a 90% winning percentage. Ryan has clearly taken over the leadership role on this team, time and time again leading the Falcons to comeback victories late in games. If you want to wager on Atlanta just to reach the Super Bowl, then you will find the Falcons at +175 to win the NFC Championship.
What’s impressive about Atlanta’s 13-3 record this season is the fact that their numbers don’t wow you. Atlanta ranks 16th in total offense at 341 total yards per game and 16th in total defense at 332 yards per game allowed. For the season, the Falcons are scoring 25.9 points per game and allowing 18.0 points per game. They are getting more turnovers on defense this season which has been a focal point all year, and they aren’t giving it away much.
The Falcons have superstars at all three skill positions on offense. Teams have to prepare to try and stop Matt Ryan, Michael Turner and Roddy White which is certainly a tall task. Ryan has thrown for 3,705 yards and 28 touchdowns to 9 interceptions. Turner has rushed for 1,371 yards and 12 touchdowns and has proven to be the horse the Falcons hoped he would when they signed him from the Chargers. White is arguably the best receiver in the league, catching 115 balls for 1,389 yards and 10 touchdowns. He led the NFL in receptions and finished second in receiving yardage.
Atlanta certainly has as good a shot as anyone to reach the Super Bowl. They are just behind the Patriots in terms of odds to win it all. I don’t believe the value is there to place a wager on this team though considering they are the favorites to come out of the NFC. The Falcons will have to beat the Packers this week just to advance, and Green Bay already gave them a run for their money in a 20-17 loss in the Georgia Dome back on November 28. The Packers outgained them by 124 yards in the game but a fumble on Atlanta’s 1-yard line proved to be very costly. Ryan completed four passes down the stretch to set up the game-winning 47-yard field goal from Matt Bryant with only nine seconds left. If they are fortunate enough to get by Green Bay again, then they’ll have either the Chicago Bears or Seattle Seahawks in the NFC title game.
Got something to say?
