2011 Atlanta Falcons Schedule

Written by

After going 9-7 and missing the NFL playoffs in 2009, the Atlanta Falcons rolled through the 2010-11 NFL season with a 13-3 record. The Falcons not only won the NFC South, they earned the top seed out of the NFC in the playoffs. All that regular season success didn’t translate into the postseason, as the Falcons were eliminated at home in their first game against the Green Bay Packers 21-48. With Matt Ryan at quarterback the Falcons figure to be a mainstay in the NFC playoffs. So far the biggest offseason move for Atlanta has been trading away a number of picks to move up and draft Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones, who should have an instant impact playing opposite of star wide out Roddy White.

While the Falcons will likely continue to make moves once the free agent gates are opened up, let’s take a look at their upcoming schedule for the 2011-12 season. Outside of their six division games against the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Carolina Panthers, Atlanta is scheduled to face off against the NFC North, AFC South, Seattle Seahawks, and Philadelphia Eagles.

The Falcons went 5-1 against the other three teams in their division last year, with the only loss coming at home against the Saints in week 15. Atlanta figures to be favored in all three home games within their division, but could struggle to come away with wins in both their road games against the Buccaneers and Saints. They should be able to beat the Panthers on the road, but that isn’t a lock considering no one really knows how Cam Newton is going to fair in his first season.

In their four games against the NFC North the Falcons get the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings at home, while having to travel to take on the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. While the Falcons will be out for revenge against the Packers in their week 5 showdown, this is easily a game they could end up losing. Atlanta should have the edge against the Vikings at home, but both games on the road against the Bears and Lions could go either way.

In their matchup against the AFC South, Atlanta should be favored in both their home games against the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars, but will likely come in as an underdog in their two road games against the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans.

While playing the other division champs is never an easy task, Atlanta got the best scenario it could ask for in their two other conference games. They get the Philadelphia Eagles at home and the Seattle Seahawks on the road. The Falcons were  7-1 at home last year, so they should come in as the favorites against the Eagles, but it won’t be easy in Michal Vick’s return to Atlanta. While Seattle can be a difficult place to play, if this team is headed back to the playoffs, this is a game they have to win.
