2009 AT&T National Predictions

AT&T National 2009 PredictionsWe are fast approaching our country’s greatest holiday, as we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July this weekend. For some of the best golfers in the world they will be celebrating at Congressional Country Club in Washington D.C., as the PGA Tour gets ready for the 2009 AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods. This will mark just the 3rd year for this event, so the list of Champions is pretty short. K.J. Choi got it started off with a win here in 2007, while Anthony Kim will be the man defending his title this weekend. Woods was unable to play in this event because of his knee problems last year, but did finish in sixth place in 2007. Congressional Country Club seems to favor the long hitters, as you really don’t get penalized for letting it rip off the tee. To no surprise Tiger Woods is the odds on favorite to win this tournament by a long shot, so I am going to give you three golfers that could still the fireworks away from Woods this weekend and come away with a win.

Jim Furyk +1500 to win: Its hard to imagine that some one as good as Furyk, hasn’t won on tour since 2007. Furyk has came close a couple times this season, as he finished third at the WGC-CA Championship and then finished second not that long ago at the Memorial Tournament. One of the reasons that you really have to like Furyk this weekend, is in the first two years of this event Furyk has tied for third in each event. Furyk might not have the distance off the tee, but is deadly accurate. His putting has been outstanding, but the one thing he needs to do is find the green in regulation with a little more regularity, as he ranks 109th in greens in regulation. Furyk is too good to not win on Tour, and I have a strong feeling that if he gets it going that streak without a win will come to an end at Congressional.

Hunter Mahan +1500 to win: Here is another guy that hasn’t won on Tour since 2007, and while he doesn’t have the track record of Furyk, Mahan has been playing some really good golf this season. After a strong finish at the US Open where he tied for 6th, Mahan backed it up last weekend with a tie for 4th at the Travelers Championship, giving him his fourth top 10 finish of the season. Mahan is another guy that has really played well at this event, as he tied for 8th here in 2007, and then came back and finished tied for 12th here last season. Mahan should be able to take advantage off his distance off the tee, but the thing that has to be going for this guy to win is the putter, as Mahan has had his struggles around the green this year.

Bubba Watson +5000 to win: If distance is what you are looking for this weekend, there are few that can hit the ball farther than Watson. Watson comes in ranked first on the PGA Tour in driving distance, but has struggled finding the green from his long drives, as he is just 103rd in greens in regulation. The fact that this guy is ranked 29th in putting average, just gives you an idea of how good this guy can be if he starts getting his second shots on the green. Watson played well at the US Open, but a 75 on Sunday pushed him back to a tie for 18th. Watson also played last week at the Travelers Championship and came away with a tie for 14th. Here is a guy with some exceptional betting odds for those of you looking for a solid sleeper this weekend, and what better place to grab your first PGA Tour win than at a tournament hosted by Woods.
