Auburn vs. Alabama Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 25, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Now on paper you might not think the upcoming SEC game between the 5-6 Auburn Tigers and the No.1 ranked 11-0 Alabama Crimson Tide, but if you anything about SEC football, its that Auburn vs. Alabama is all that matters when these two teams face off, and the fact that Auburn has won the last 6 games, makes this a real interesting matchup. Last week the Crimson Tide had little trouble taking down Mississippi State, as they walked away with a 32-7 win, while the Tigers nearly pulled off a big upset against Georgia, but fell just short 17-13. For those of you looking to do some NCAA football betting on this one, the oddsmakers have Alabama 14 point favorites at home over the Tigers at Bookmaker.com

Auburn is going to play its heart out there is no question about that, and thats sometimes enough for teams to pull off the big win or at least scare the crap out of the favorite. Against Georgia last week the Tigers played a lot better than anyone thought, as they actually had a 13-10 lead with a little over 11 minutes remaining. Kodi Burns threw for 179 yards and a score, but just couldn’t get the Tigers to make that one last drive to win the game. The Tigers did a pretty solid job running the football for 124 yards with Mario Fannin running for 59 yards and a score on just 8 carries. Now Alabama plays one hell of a defense, so its going to take nearly everything this team has to win this game, but with nothing to lose its sometimes a lot easier to pull of the huge upset.

The Tigers defense really did a great job holding the Georgia Bulldogs in check, but did give up the lead twice in the game. Now the Tigers are probably lucky that this one was as close as it was, as Georgia’s Matt Stafford completed 15 of 24 passes for 215 yards and 2 scores, and Knowshon Moreno ran wild on the Tigers for 131 yards and 2 scores, but the thing is the defense doesn’t have to be great this weekend, they just have to make sure they don’t give up the big plays, as the Crimson Tide have shown they can struggle moving the football. Now Alabama’s offense has picked it up over the last few weeks, and if they can find a way to put more than 30 on the board this week, there is little doubt they will walk away on top in this one. Last week against Mississippi State the Tide ran all over the Bulldogs for 198 yards with Mark Ingram and Glen Coffee combining for 149 yards, including a 1 yard touchdown run from Ingram. The Tide also got a solid performance from quarterback John Parker Wilson who threw for 148 yards and added a touchdown run as well. Now the Crimson Tide just have to score in this one, as the lower the score remains the better Auburns chances of winning are.

Now even though Auburn’s chances go up if the score remains low, that doesn’t mean they will be able to do enough against the stifling Crimson Tide defense. In their last game against Mississippi State the defense not only started the game off with a safety, they got a 80 yard punt return for a touchdown from Javier Arenas. Now this unit is easily the big favorite, but they have to find a way to get just as pumped as the Tigers are going to be in this one. Bet Alabama -14 at Bookmaker.com
