Auburn vs LSU College Football Betting Lines

Written October 23, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

It’s a battle of the Tigers in Baton Rouge this Saturday evening. Auburn comes in having lost their last two after a stunning 5-0 start, while LSU has just one blemish on its record and that was a loss to the top ranked team in the country. The two teams have very different strengths, with Auburn strong offensively and LSU strong on the defensive side of the football. This will be an interesting SEC matchup that could go a long ways to determining how the rest of the season plays out for both of these teams.

The LSU Tigers have had a bit of a strange season of disappointments all across the offensive side of the ball, but they are still 5-1 on the season. The biggest disappointment has been the rushing attack of the Tigers which was expected to be a real strength of the team. Charles Scott and Keiland Williams are both highly touted pro prospects, but neither has been able to consistently run the ball well this year for LSU. The offensive line has taken some heat, and probably deservedly so. Jordon Jefferson has been pretty efficient at quarterback, but the passing attack has primarily been limited to short passes. The LSU defense has been tremendous this year. The defense is giving up just 14.5 points per game and 295 yards per game.  Get an incredible $500 match bonus when you sign up for a new account with BetUS.

Auburn has hit a bit of a slide, but the team still has outperformed most expectations for them this season thus far. The offense has done a complete 360 degree change from last season, when they couldn’t do anything right. Chris Todd has been terrific at quarterback with 1,443 yards and a 12/2 touchdown to interception ratio. Ben Tate and Ontario McCalebb both average almost 6 yards per carry, so the Auburn offense is definitely not just a pass happy offense. Auburn’s new offensive scheme allows them to keep the speed up and not allow defensive substitutions, which has proven very successful. The Auburn defense has shown a real weakness against solid running attacks, allowing 181 yards per game on the ground.

The NCAA football odds makers opened this game at LSU -11, but the line has quickly moved down to LSU -7.5. Clearly there has been some big money coming in on Auburn as the week has moved along. The posted total is set at 52 points. LSU is just 3-13-1 against the spread in their last 17 home games, but Auburn is just 5-12 against the spread in their last 17 games overall. The under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams.

This will be a good test for the Auburn football program to see exactly how far they have come from last year. LSU will try their best to run the football, and against this Auburn rush defense I think they may have some pretty good success. Auburn will try to hurry up the game while LSU will want to control the ball and keep Auburn’s offense off of the field. Look for LSU to keep this game lower scoring than most expect and win a close one at home.
