Ball State NCAA Football Predictions 2009

Written July 15, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Ball State NCAA Football PredictionsThe Ball State Cardinals made national headlines by running through the MAC with a perfect 12-0 record. But this team petered out in a MAC Championship loss to Buffalo and a GMAC Bowl setback against Tulsa. Now the Cardinals will have to replace quarterback Nate Davis, who left for the NFL, and head coach Brady Hoke, who left for San Diego State. Ball State still has plenty of talent to be one of the best in the league. College football lines are posted at Sportsbook.com in terms of the 2010 BCS National Championship. Offense: All the Cardinals have to do is replace the most prolific offense in school history. Plus, they’ll have to do it with a new quarterback and a new coach. Head coach Stan Parrish replaces Brady Hoke, who guided Ball State to a 12-win season. Parrish was the offensive coordinator, so he knows the personnel well and can make adjustments to the scheme on the go. Freshman quarterback Kelly Page is the starter after spring ball despite making plenty of mistakes. Parrish had high expectations for Page in the spring, but claims he met and went past them. Wide receiver Briggs Orsbon and tight end Madaris Grant are Page’s two best weapons.

Osgood caught a team-high 68 balls for 813 yards and five scores last season. Grant chipped in 26 catches for 285 yards as a freshman, and more will be expected from him in his sophomore season. Seth White will be given every opportunity to win a starting receiver spot in the fall. He is fast and athletic and made a good impression in the spring. Senior running back MiQuale Lewis will make matters much easier for Page after rushing for 1,736 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2008. He is so important to the offense that Parrish kept him out of contact drills in the spring. The offensive line will have to break in four new starters, so Parrish will be looking to find more ways to get Lewis the ball in open space. The lone returning starter is left guard Michael Switzer, and this is a line that features freshman left tackle Cameron Lowry protecting Page’s blind side.

Defense: New coordinator Doug Graber was concerned about the defense’s fundamentals in the spring. Taking on blocks, pass coverage, getting to the ball and tackling appear to be problem areas once again. Graber will look to senior free safety Alex Knipp for leadership. He was the team’s leading tackler with 96 stops last year, including 3.5 for a loss. Knipp also intercepted two passes and broke up six others. He’ll team with strong safety Sean Baker, who had 94 tackles and six interceptions a year ago. These two will be counted upon heavily to make up for mistakes from the front 9 defenders.

The defensive line returns intact. Defensive end Robert Eddins is the playmaker of this bunch, registering 45 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and four sacks a year ago. End Brandon Crawford also chipped in eight tackles for loss and three sacks on the other side. Davyd Jones serves as the team’s only returning starter at linebacker. But he’s a good one, posting 85 tackles, including 12 for a loss last year. He’s small at 6-1, 210 pounds, but he can get up the field and move from sideline to sideline in a hurry.
