2011 Baltimore Ravens Schedule

Written by

The Baltimore Ravens have been a Super Bowl contender over the last few seasons, but it appears their window of opportunity is closing.  Many of Baltimore’s key players are past their primes, including Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Derrick Mason, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Anquan Boldin.  This team is still primed to make another run at a title in the 2011-12 season provided the offense can quit turning the ball over in crucial situations of big games.

Baltimore is coming off of a 12-4 campaign last season in which they finished second in the AFC North, right behind the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Ravens made easy work of the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round with a 30-7 road victory.  After splitting the season series with the Steelers, Baltimore would drop the rubber match 31-24 in Pittsburgh in the AFC Divisional Round.  The Ravens went into halftime with a 21-7 lead.  That deficit would normally be insurmountable with the way they play, but once again turnovers let the Steelers right back into the game.

It’s now time to take a look at their schedule for the 2011-12 season to see how they will fare.  The Ravens will obviously play six division games against the likes of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland.  They went 4-2 within their division last year.  Baltimore is likely to be favored in every AFC North game they play this season with the exception of a trip to Pittsburgh.

The Ravens get the luxury of facing the NFC West and the AFC South, which are arguably the two weakest divisions in football.  The Seattle Seahawks won their division with a 7-9 record a year ago and the NFC West doesn’t appear to be much better in 2011.  The Ravens will host the 49ers and Cardinals while having to travel to face the Seahawks and Rams.  I believe Baltimore will be favored in all four of those contests.

The one team you always have to worry about in the AFC South is the Indianapolis Colts, but Baltimore will get Peyton Manning and company at home and should be favored.  They also host the Houston Texans, and will travel to face the two worst teams in that division in the Titans and Jaguars.  Baltimore’s other two games will come against the second-place teams in the AFC West and AFC East.  They hit the road to take on the San Diego Chargers in a game they will likely be an underdog, but host the New York Jets and should be a favorite in that one.

After looking at their schedule, the Ravens appear to be favored in 14 of 16 games.  That means essentially their record should be 14-2, though they will likely get upset a time or two as every team does.  Another 12-4 campaign is likely, but if they can win a few more close games this season then the Ravens should be able to overtake the Steelers atop the AFC North in 2011.
