Bankrolls

Written June 3, 2008 by Jack Jones

A bankroll, also known as a wad or a roll, is the amount of money a player has in his stash to back all of his or her wagering activities. A traveling bankroll is the cash specifically set aside to support gambling activities while on a trip or vacation.

We recommend that you divide up your traveling bankroll into lesser amounts for the specific days of your trip, and into even smaller amounts for table sitting stakes. This will allow you to determine how much you are going to allow yourself to risk before you sit down to any gambling session.

Simply divide your total bankroll by the days that you will be gambling, then divide that amount by the number of sessions that you are going to be playing each day. This leaves you with your single-session bankroll. You should leave the rest of your bankroll in the safe in your room, and you don’t want to bring your entire bankroll with you to one session. You don’t want to be betting with the next session or next day’s money until that time comes, or else you might be cutting your trip short due to lack of finances.

Dividing up your bankroll is only part of the total money management plan though. You should also set a goal of winning between 50 to 100% of a single-session bankroll and if you reach that goal then set aside your original session bankroll plus half your winnings, playing with the remainder and continue to set aside your additional winnings.

Your bankroll won’t be able to weather the eventual bad streaks that you will hit. The casino will grind away at your stack because not only is every game giving them a house edge, but their bankroll is almost infinite in comparison to yours. This means you should also set loss limits, if half of your session bankroll flies over to the casinos side of the equation, then a break may be in order.

You could also use the winning progressive method strategy of betting. Do this by determining a set percentage increase for each winning bet. You can find the details on one of these by reading the article on five level betting.

We recommend that you never increase your bet when losing. The double-up-to-catch-up strategy is called the Martingale System, and is the worst money management system that you can use.

The last peice of advice we can offer is that if you exchange your bankroll for chips or numbers on an online casino account screen, you need to treat this amount as your own hard-earned cash. The casinos goal is to create a fantasy-land experience that has you devaluing your money by having you bet chips instead of actual dollars, so you don’t think about what exactly is at stake with each hand. They even put out deceptive nicknames for these chips, a $5 chip is a “nickel,” a $25 chip a “quarter.” Don’t be fooled, and good luck on any trips you may take.
