Baseball Picks: Oakland A’s at Chicago White Sox
Written June 1, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
At 19-29, The Athletics continue to ponder what it is they can’t get right. When you look at this lineup and see names like Orlando Cabrera, Jason Giambi, Jack Cust and all-star Matt Holliday you’d think their record would be much better. The pitching staff is usually much more potent as they are young every which way you look. The only player hitting over .300 on this team is Adam Kennedy who doesn’t play everyday. The lack luster numbers could be very miss leading though as Holliday and Giambi have home run potential on any night. The starter tonight is promising young arm Trevor Cahill. He has looked brilliant at times while others he has gotten rocked, his 2-5 record and 4.45 ERA is not what the A’s were expecting. These numbers will prove big in this game, Cahill has an ERA of 9.13 against left handed batters and an ERA of 1.13 against right handed batters. The only lefty hitter he will face that has power is Jim Thome. Expect Cahill to look like a stud tonight and for Matt Holliday to hit one out of the park. Oakland is set up nicely to get a victory here, the question is whether or not they will execute and not hurt themselves.
The White Sox are 24-25 and currently on a three game winning streak. They have been led by all star candidate Jermaine Dye who has 13 home runs and 34 RBIs this season. He has carried this team in a big way. Paul Konerko is also contributing for the Chi Sox as he has a .309 batting average with seven homers and 33 RBIs while Jim Thome has added eight homers and 29 RBIs. Alexei Ramirez continues to struggle. On the pitching side they have been hot/cold all year long. You never know what to expect from a White Sox starter. Tonight they send veteran Bartolo Colon to the mound, he has a 3-4 record with a 3.80 ERA. Colon has been better during day games this year rather then nights. His ERA for night games is 4.28. It will be interesting to see how he attacks the middle of Oakland’s lineup. Location will be key for him as we all know he has a tendency to get wild. I do expect Chicago to get some runs, but they might fall just short.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Athletics are 4-4 over their past eight games. The UNDER is 21-5 when the White Sox are the favorite at home. Chicago has won three of their last four games. I like Oakland tonight. Cahill seems to throw well after getting hit hard in his previous start. Colon is not a good night pitcher and the lack of lefty hitters on the White Sox will hurt them. Look for a lower scoring game tonight and for the A’s to win a 5-3 game.
Jordan’s Picks: Oakland Athletics +130 & UNDER 9.5
(medium plays on both)
