Baylor Connecticut Predictions

UConn v. Baylor Friday Night College Football

Friday night college football on ESPN2 takes place when the Connecticut Huskies play host to the Baylor Bears at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The oddsmakers are giving the Huskies the early advantage as Sportsbook.com lists the spread on this game at UConn -12 over Baylor with the total set at 51.

This will be the first time the Bears take the road in 2008, after opening the year with three straight on their home turf. Week 1 didn’t go so hot as the team was blown out 41-13 by Wake Forest, but since then things are looking up. The following weak Baylor throttled Northwestern State by a score of 51-6 and just last Friday took care of Washington State 45-17. UConn has played well in getting off to a 3-0 start, beginning with their 35-3 over Hofstra, then a tough 12-9 overtime win over Temple before taking care of Virginia 45-10 last weekend.

So far this season Baylor has depended on their quarterback, Robert Griffin, to supply the offensive firepower. He’s been extremely accurate in completing 62.3% of his passes this year without being picked off once, but he has also thrown for four touchdowns. The freshman also leads the team with 288 yards on nine yards per carry, while getting into the end zone another four times with his feet. Jay Finley is also more than capable at tailback as last week he put up 119 yards and a score on just 10 attempts.

Against Washington State this Baylor defense had a sensational outing. The team racked up seven sacks while limiting the Cougars to just 340 total yards. The defensive front has been solid in the first three weeks, yielding just 95 rushing yards per game on 2.4 yards per carry. It was even better last week in allowing just 77 yards on 38 carries. The team was also opportunistic in forcing five turnovers against Washington State. Donald Brown has done a great job moving the ball for Connecticut this year and against Virginia he ran for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Those totals ran the junior’s numbers up to 588 yards and eight touchdowns over his first three games. The team put up 382 rushing yards last week on 7.2 yards per carry. Quarterback Tyler Lorenzen just has to manage the game with so the rushing attack picking up so many yards and he’s done a good job so far. Last week he was 13-for-15 even though he only gained 124 yards passing.

Even with the running game turning heads, you have to say that the defensive side of the ball has carried this team so far. The numbers are impressive, 7.3 points per game allowed, 229 total yards per game allowed, 66.3 rushing yards per game on 2.6 yards per carry. All of this while still being aggressive and forcing seven turnovers. Both teams can run the ball, and both teams can stop the run. If you think UConn is going to win this game by two touchdowns, bet the UConn -12 spread at Sportsbook.com using your credit or debit card.
