Baylor at Oklahoma Football Odds
Written October 9, 2009 by Hector Garza
Oklahoma isn’t the place to be. With very high pre season expectations, they’re now 2-2 and scrambling for a big 12 south title and hanging by a thread to their BCS hopes. The #19 ranked Sooners will face their first conference test in Baylor this Saturday at home in Norman. The game is set for 3:30 p.m. EDT and the football betting odds show the Bears as the underdogs by 26.5 points and the total at 54 ½.
Oklahoma was ranked #3 to start the season with Heisman trophy winner QB Sam Bradford leading the charge. Then came BYU, who stunned them in week one 14-13 and took out Bradford with a shoulder injury in the process. Backup QB Landry Jones has done a nice job as his replacement, leading Oklahoma to two lopsided victories against inferior opponents before losing to then #17 Miami-Fl last week 21-20. Jones has thrown 10 td’s to 3 interceptions for 861 yards and been sacked a total of 4 times. The offense has more adversity to overcome as WR Ryan Broyles, with 23 receptions and 7 td’s, is out 2-4 weeks with a broken shoulder blade. They should be able to rely on their strong running game that is averaging 185.5 ypg on 4.6 ypc. Defensively the Sooners have no complaints. They’re ranked 4th nationally in scoring (8.7 ppg) and 10th in yardage (253 ypg). DE Jeremy Beal has been a man among boys, recording 3 sacks in each game the last two weeks with 8 total tackles for a loss. DT Gerald McCoy joins Beal as one of the best in the nation with 6.5 tfl’s and a sack. The linebackers are also standouts with the three starters amassing 91 total tackles, and the Bears will no doubt find it difficult to run the ball with success.
Baylor is another team that’s had to deal with multiple injuries. Their star QB Robert Griffin looks to be out for the season after suffering a knee injury in week 3, star RB Jay Finley hasn’t played the last 2 weeks with an ankle injury, and their #2 QB Blake Szymanski was out with a bruised shoulder. That left #3 QB Nick Florence to take on Kent State last week, and he showed promise leading the offense to a win while going 20-27 passing for 216 yards and rushing for another 60 and 2 td’s. Finley is expected to be back, and the RB is averaging 9.6 ypc within an offense that is averaging 196.2 ypg rushing. Szymanski should be ready this week, but either QB that gets the start will need to rely on the running game to take pressure off of them against a tough Oklahoma’s D.
The Bears defense has done a good job against the pass, limiting opponents to 166 ypg. That will be to their advantage as Oklahoma is without their star TE Jermaine Gresham and WR Broyles. Whether they have to face QB Bradford is a decision that is yet to be made. Either way, the defense has recorded 8 sacks and 7 interceptions, and will be looking to add to those stats. Their biggest challenge will be stopping the run, and senior LB’s Antonio Jones and Joe Pawelek will be up to the task as they’ve tallied 55 tackles.
Baylor is still looking for their first win against Oklahoma…ever. While both teams are banged up, Oklahoma’s defense is the best unit that will see the field. The Bears will be in hostile territory but have the potential to contain a potent ground game as they’re ranked 19th nationally against the run. Oklahoma will be looking to make a statement, but 26 points is too many to cover against a hungry and talented Baylor team.
