Baylor at Texas Football Picks & Predictions

Written November 6, 2008 by Jack Jones

The No. 5 Texas Longhorns will try to rebound off of their first loss of the season when they play host on Saturday, November 8th to the Baylor Bears. The college football odds makers think that the Longhorns won’t have a problem in this one, listing Texas as a 28-point favorite over Baylor with the total set at 66.

The Bears have lost their last three games to drop to 3-6 on the year. Last week Baylor came out and gave Missouri everything they could handle but still fell short 31-28. This team was hoping to make a bowl game this year, but they are going to have to win their last three games to become eligible and with both Texas and Texas Tech on the slate you can go ahead and count that possibility out.

How will Texas rebound from their first loss of the season? One that will potentially knock them out of the Big 12 Championship and BCS title race? We will find out in this one, but last week’s heartbreaker was to be expected after a grueling schedule that saw them first dismantle Oklahoma, Missouri, and Oklahoma State. With 10 straight wins in this series, the Longhorns aren’t going to be in a letdown spot here.

Baylor’s offense really isn’t all that bad this year and they are averaging 27.3 ppg and 379.4 total ypg. Freshman quarterback Robert Griffin has completed 61.4% of his passes for 1,688 yards and 11 touchdowns, but what is most impressive is the single interception he has thrown. The scary thing is that he can also move the ball with his feet, rushing for 587 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this year. Kendall Wright has been Griffin’s favorite target with 40 catches for 514 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jay Finley has 599 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, but has also scored twice catching the ball.

The defense hasn’t done a lot to stop the opposition for Baylor though, giving up 27.9 ppg and 394.6 total ypg. The opposition has managed to score 31 touchdowns, including 17 on the ground even though the Bears are only allowing 3.6 ypc. The Bear secondary though is a little banged up, which could spell big trouble against the Longhorn offense. Texas had a tough time last week on offense against the Red Raiders, rushing for only 80 yards while allowing quarterback Colt McCoy to be sacked four times and pressured into throwing an interception. McCoy still went 20-for-34 with 294 yards and two touchdowns though, but that wasn’t enough. His top target was Malcolm Williams, who had four receptions for 182 yards and two touchdowns. The Longhorns are still averaging 44.2 ppg on 474 total ypg. The balanced attack has put together 24 rushing touchdowns to 25 passing touchdowns. McCoy is the team leader in rushing yards with 428 and seven touchdowns while completing 79% of his throws for 2,579 yards and 23 touchdowns. He has also only been picked off five times. Jordan Shipley has been his top receiver, racking up 64 catches for 779 yards and 10 scores.

The Longhorn defense has held opponents to 20.7 ppg and 361.9 total ypg, but that is do to a lot of quick possessions by their offense. Opponents haven’t been able to run at all against this Texas football team, gaining just 2.7 ypc and scoring only five rushing touchdowns. The team hasn’t been so successful against the pass, but with 31 sacks they can get pressure and force turnovers.
