Baylor vs Missouri: Big 12 Tournament Predictions

Written March 14, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

missouri-baylor-predictions-031409The Baylor Bears pull off another stunner.  Amazing.  They start their conference run off my defeating Kansas the top seed.  Then yesterday they shock the Longhorns winning 76-70.  Pre-season many people thought this is the Baylor team they would see.  An explosive offense with star guards and a top notch transition game.  Baylor is a unique team with no one guy who you can call their “stud” player.  The combination of guards Curtis Jerrells and LaceDarius Dunn combine for 31.5 PPG, 9 rebounds and a shade over 5 assists per game.  Forward Kevin Rogers is a key contributor for the Bears.  He averages 12 points and 8 rebounds.  Tweety Carter and Henry Dugat are also nice contributors for the Bears.  Baylor now will meet a Missouri Tigers team which I firmly believe is the most underrated team in the country.  They present match up problems all over the court.  Baylor’s advantage is their speed and shooting with their guards.  Kevin Rogers will be the key for Baylor tonight.  He must establish his presence in the paint.  Baylor scores 77 PPG while shooting 46% from the field.  The Bears confidence level is sky high right now.  With huge wins vs Kansas and Texas they are showing the world that they have all the ability to be that team everybody thought was a pre-season powerhouse.  Hold the phone though, they better not get to happy just yet.  They have a freight train of offense coming their way.  The Missouri Tigers are currently 5 point favorites over Baylor.

The Missouri Tigers, my number one sleeper to go far in the NCAA tourney.  This team is an offensive outburst just waiting to happen.  They average 82 PPG while shooting 47.5% from the field.  The Tigers are led by their senior leader and captain, an All-Conference stud forward DeMarre Carroll.  DeMarre averages 17 points, 7 rebounds and shoots 57% from the field.  While Carroll is their main man, Leo Lyons is nothing to slouch about.   Lyons averages 14 points, 6 rebounds and he shoots 50% from the field.  Carroll and Lyons are monsters.  Guys that can change any game.  However, how can we talk about two offensive juggernauts and leave out one of the nation’s superb defensive players, guard J.T. Tiller.  J.T. will be matched up against whoever is hot for Baylor and most likely will contain him.  Missouri is not getting the national credit they deserve.  They have great wins vs USC, Vs California(27 point win), they beat Oklahoma State twice, vs Kansas, @ Texas and most notable win  vs Kansas.  Missouri has top notch guard play on both the offensive and defensive end, they have good control in the open floor and are impossible to contain in the open court.  If Mizzu loses this game, it will be due to their lack of play rather then Baylor’s performance.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: Missouri defeated Baylor in thei only meeting this year 89-72.  This is not the same Baylor team though.  Curtis Jerrells will be able to compete with Tiller and Matt Lawrence and I believe Kevin Rogers will play well.  However, they are running into a buzz saw.  The Missouri Tigers are just over powering.  As stated 82 PPG is unreal.  They shoot well from the field and are an underrated defensive team.  Leo Lyons will present match up problems as will DeMarre Carroll.  J.T. Tiller will be the best defensive player on the court like he usually is which will work against Baylor.  Baylor is 10-15 ATS this year while Missouri is 16-10 ATS.  While Missouri is 9-3 in their last Big 12 games against the spread, Baylor is 8-1 in their last nine meetings against Missouri.  Tonight, that won’t matter.  Missouri is the vastly superior team.  They will win this game and end Baylor’s dream run.  Dem=Marre Carroll will have a ridiculous game while J.T. Tiller will frustrate the heck out of whoever he is guarding on Baylor.  Take Mizzu and cash in.  This is my BEST BET of the day.  Do not miss out on it.
