BCS Predictions for Week 12
Written November 11, 2008 by Steve Janus
There wasn’t much of a shake-up in the BCS standing this week. Alabama, Texas Tech, Texas, Florida, and Oklahoma all won. Alabama and Texas Tech had the most difficult road, but both came out with yet another victory. The biggest news in the BCS standings is likely to come in two weeks when Texas Tech visits Oklahoma in a huge game for both programs. This week all of the top five are heavy favorites or enjoying a bye week. Don’t anticipate much to change after this coming week unless there is a monster upset.
Alabama earned an impressive win in overtime over LSU last week to maintain the top spot in the BCS standings. This week the Crimson Tide head back home to host the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Tide are likely already looking forward to a showdown with Florida in the SEC Championship game. Still, no upset alert for Alabama this week, the Tide are 20 point favorites over the Bulldogs.
Texas Tech ended up destroying Oklahoma state last week, 56-20, their second impressive win over a top 10 team in as many weeks. The Red Raiders have this week off, but an extremely strong Oklahoma team awaits them on November 22nd for yet another season-defining game. Most of the more interesting scenarios for how the BCS ends up will come from that game, so we will be watching it with a lot of interest as well.
The Texas Longhorns had enough big wins in their back pocket to be considered the best one loss team in the nation according to the BCS rankings. Texas beat up on Baylor last week, but shouldn’t fall asleep on the road this week against a potentially dangerous Kansas team. Oddsmakers have Texas as 13.5 point favoirtes against Kansas.
Florida must really be regretting their loss earlier this season at home to Ole Miss. If it weren’t for that loss, the Gators would have a fine chance at being the number one team in the nation. Florida is still alive for a BCS Championship game bid, however. This week they have South Carolina at home, followed by a game against Citadel, then at a much improved Florida State. They’ve all but locked up a spot in the SEC Championship game, the big question is whether or not they can knock of Alabama for their chance at another National Title. The Gators are 21 point favorites over the South Carolina Gamecocks this week.
Oklahoma is still quietly destroying opponents. They steam-rolled over Texas A&M last week, 66-28, the 6th time this year they’ve gone over 50 points in a game. This isn’t a team anyone wants to play right now, but the Sooners have a lot to prove with Texas A&M and Oklahoma State remaining on their schedule. If they can somehow power through those two teams, it will make for some interesting debates come Bowl Season.
