Chicago Bears at Cincinnati Bengals Betting Lines

Written October 25, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The 3-2 Chicago Bears visit the 4-2 Cincinnati Bengals in what should be a very entertaining matchup this Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. Both teams are coming off a loss and need to get back on the right track if they want to meet their goal of making the playoffs. The Bengals had been making a habit of being the cardiac kids and coming from behind, but that finally came back to bite them last weekend. The Bears have had far too many turnovers so far this season, turnovers that have cost them points and a couple of games.

The Chicago Bears picked up Jay Cutler in one of the biggest moves of the offseason and for the most part Cutler has done well. He has thrown too many interceptions, 7, but he does have a completion percentage of 64% and 10 touchdowns. The passing offense for the Bears has been helped greatly by the emergence of wide receiver Johnny Knox as a speedy deep threat. Now the Bears have Devin Hester and Knox at wide receiver, so defenses have to be very careful to avoid giving up the big play. The rushing offense has been disappointing this season as Matt Forte has not been able to find the running room that he did last season. The defense has been hit hard by injuries, but they have still played well and kept the team in every game this year.

The Cincinnati Bengals were becoming the darlings of the NFL after huge comeback wins against the Steelers and the Ravens, but last weekend they came back down to earth a bit with a loss to the Texans. The Bengals offense has failed to capitalize on opportunities given to them the way they should, and it seems they can only move the ball consistently when they get behind. Carson Palmer has been brilliant in crunch time, but he has thrown 7 interceptions already this season. Chad Ocho Cinco is definitely more motivated this year, and Andre Caldwell is starting to emerge as another threat at the wide receiver spot. Cedric Benson, the former Bear, has done a terrific job at running back for the Bengals. Benson is 3rd in the NFL in rushing yards and he has been a real work horse for the Bengals this season. The defense is much improved thanks to a better defensive line and a pair of talented USC linebackers in Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga. Their best defensive lineman, Antwan Odom, went down last weekend and has a torn Achilles tendon which will keep him out the rest of the season. The Bengals defense will have to step up without their best pass rusher, so it will be interesting to see how they perform.

The Bengals were favored by a single point in this showdown according the NFL odds but the latest update has the game listed as a pick ‘em. The posted total has been set at 42 points. The Bengals are 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 as home favorites, but the Bears are also 1-4 in their last five road games.

Cedric Benson is definitely pumped up for this game, but the Bears will present a tough challenge for Benson and the Bengals. If the Bengals don’t play well for the entire game they won’t beat the Bears. The posted total of 42 points seems a bit too low in this one. The best play looks to be the over.
