Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears NFL Odds & Spread
Written October 31, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Chicago Bears will look to keep pace with the Packers atop of the NFC North when they come back from their bye week to take on the Detroit Lions, who suffered their 7th straight loss last week against the Redskins. The two teams have already met once, and it was all Bears, winning 34-7. This time the games in Chicago and oddsmakers are all Bears, as Chicago comes in 12.5 point favorites over the Lions at Bookmaker.com
The Lions did pretty much nothing at all against the Bears last time scoring just 7 points, and this time around they are without wide receiver Roy Williams. The run game only mustered 51 yards in the first meeting, and if that numbers comes anywhere to repeating itself this team is not going to have a chance this weekend. Dan Orlovsky remains under center for this team, and you have to like how he has played given the talent he has surrounding him. If the Lions don’t come to play they won’t score more than 10 in this one.

The Lions defense has been solid against the run on the season giving up just 84 yards a game, but that wasn’t the case last week, as Clinton Portis carried it 24 times for 126 yards. Now the Lions aren’t good against the pass and that did show last Sunday as Jason Campbell picked apart the Lions defense throwing for 328 yards and a score, if Orton has another game like he did last time against this unit, its going to be hard for this team to keep it close enough to even pull off a win on the spread. The Bears have won 3 of 4, and there is no question this team could be even better than their record shows, as they have lost nearly every game in the 4th quarter after having a lead. In their last game before the bye, the Bears put up 48 on the Vikings, and if thats any case for what to expect this weekend, then this one isn’t even going to be worth watching. Kyle Orton continues to play well, as he has thrown for over 280 yards in each of his last 3 games, and during that span he threw zero interceptions. Last time against the Lions he threw for 334 yards and 2 scores, so expect a big day out of Orton this Sunday.
The Bears defense has showed signs it wants to play like the defense that carried them to the Super Bowl, but giving up 48 points to a Vikings offense that had struggled to score more than a touchdown all season, is not convincing to many people. Good thing here is the Lions really don’t have much of a threat besides Calvin Johnson, and even if he gets his it likely won’t be enough for the Lions to keep this one close.
