How to Beat Gambling Point Spreads
Written March 9, 2009 by Evan Altemus
Is it possible to consistently make money with sports betting? Evan Altemus thinks so and he’s going to break down a few ways that you can beat gambling point spreads even with the sportsbooks having the advantage of juice. With this article he is going to talk about basketball and football betting since they have the most similarities regarding point spreads.
One of the more frequent questions we get are how many games should a person bet on in a given day, week or month? There really is no one correct answer to that as it depends on your system and how you like to bet. Some people find edges in several games each day, while others only like to play a few games a week. There is no right or wrong answer, but it will depend on your risk tolerance and how big of an edge you need in order to wager. The key is to have a plan and stick to it.
Emotional Wins & Losses
When looking over the matchups, try to find teams that are coming off emotional wins and then determine how good that team is. If the team isn’t very good then that increases the likelihood they will have a let down in the following game, especially if they take to the road. You also want to break down games from the opposite perspective and find quality teams coming off a loss, as they are motivated to get back on track before dropping back-to-back games.
Team Matchups
Always look for games that has a team matching up a strength against an opponent’s weakness, especially if the team with the weakness is the favorite. In basketball look for something like a good outside shooting team playing a team that has allowed opponents to shoot a high percentage from behind the arc.
Stay Focused
How much time each day do you have to handicap games? If it’s not very much, then pick a few teams to follow closely and look for opportunities there. Do not try to follow every NCAA basketball team as you will just not have enough time to go over the numbers and find your winners. If you follow a single conference then you can go in-depth, which is a must if you plan on winning with your betting. The sportsbooks are at a disadvantage in having to put lines out on every single game, but you don’t have to bet every one so be selective and find value. If you are following a team that is on a hot or cold streak in pro sports then you can find value early on, but once the national media outlets start picking up on that team’s hot or cold play, the public follows suit, the lines adjust, and the value is gone.
These are three examples of strategies you can use to win with your football and basketball betting. Remember that if you don’t have enough time to break down the odds each day you can sign up for the sports picks offered by our handicappers and win with their expert advice.
