The 2011 Belmont Stakes is set to race on Saturday, June 11th and will be nationally televised on NBC. Before you decide to bet on the third leg of the Triple Crown, I’ll give you a little background information on this event. Twenty-nine horses have been eligible to win the Triple Crown heading into the Belmont, and only eleven have succeeded in this race’s 143-year history. There is no horse eligible this year after Animal Kingdom won the Kentucky Derby before finishing second to Shackleford in the Preakness Stakes.
The Belmont is named after August Belmont, the former leading banker and racing man of the 19th century. He was the president of the Jockey Club back in 1867, and he was the owner of the first and second-place finishers in the 1869 race. The year 1973 marked the world record time of 2:24 for the mile and a half on dirt. Secretariat was the winner that year, posting a Belmont record 31-length victory.
How should you go about betting the 2011 Belmont Stakes? I’ll show you the most popular types of wagers you can place below. The win, place and show bets are the most simple, while the Exacta and Trifecta wagers are the most popular because of the possibilities of huge payouts for small amounts wagered. Before you decide to throw some money down at your local race track on the Belmont, be sure to put in the necessary research on the contenders so you aren’t betting blindly.
Win – This is just as easy as it sounds. All you have to do is pick the winner of the race to get paid. For example, a win $2 wager on Animal Kingdom at 3/1 odds would profit you $6.00.
Place – This type of wager means that you pick a horse to finish in the top two. So if your horse finishes in first or second, you get paid.
Show – A show bet requires your horse to finish in the top three. This type of wager doesn’t pay that well, but if you get a longshot to come in the top three you will make a decent amount. Your horse coming in first, second, or third yields a winning wager.
Exacta – This is one of the most popular bets you can place in horse racing. You must pick two horses to finish in first and second in the exact order. You can also “Box” two horses in an exacta which costs you an extra $2 for a $2 wager. A “Box” is the way to go because this gives you the option of your two selected horses coming in first and second in ANY order.
Trifecta – A successful trifecta wager would mean that you picked the top three finishers in the exact order. It’s hard to cash in a winning trifecta ticket because it’s so difficult to pick the top three exactly right. If you use the “Box” option, it makes your chances much more realistic. A $2 trifecta “Box” would cost you exactly $12, but it means that your three horses can come in first, second, and third in ANY order.
