2011 Belmont Stakes Odds

Written by

The 143rd running of the Belmont Stakes takes place this Saturday on June 11th. This is the third leg of the Triple Crown and the oldest of the three races. Animal Kingdom took down the Kentucky Derby as a 21-to-1 longshot and Shackleford won the Preakness Stakes at 13-to-1. Will it be another horse with big odds to take down the Belmont? I’m going to go over the odds on every contender while also giving a little background information on each.

This is the most challenging of the Triple Crown races simply because it’s the longest at 1 ½ miles. Stamina, conditioning and heart will all be put to the test Saturday. Both Animal Kingdom and Shackleford will have to overcome fatigue and fresh competitors to try and win two of the three biggest races of the year. Drosselmeyer took down the 2010 Belmont Stakes by two lengths after burying the field in the home stretch. The widest margin of victory was Secretariat’s ridiculous 31-length win back in 1973. Here is a look at the contenders and their odds.

Animal Kingdom (3/1) – The champion of the Kentucky Derby and the runner-up at the Preakness Stakes is the early favorite to take down the Belmont.

Nehro (9/2) – After skipping the Preakness, Nehro is fresh and ready to make a run in the Belmont. He is looking to break a steak of three straight runner-up finishes.

Shackleford (5/1) – This is a speed horse who won the shortest leg of the Triple Crown while leading from start to finish at the Preakness. The 1 ½ mile distance of the Belmont Stakes may be beyond his abilities.

Master of Hounds (10/1) – He excelled at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. But his disappointing fifth-place finish at Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Derby may mean that Master of Hounds if no more than a turf runner.

Mucho Macho Man (15/1) – Still managed to finish sixth in the Preakness despite losing a shoe out of the gate. He is always right around the money and this son of Macho Uno may relish the Belmont Stakes.

Santiva (15/1) – This late-blooming colt showed solid improvement off his Peter Pan Stakes (G2) win on May 14 at Belmont Park. Having that track experience is certainly a plus.

Brilliant Speed (20/1) – This sleeper in the field had to come eight-wide in the Derby and was rapidly closing to finish seventh.

Stay Thirsty (22/1) – The son of Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop, Stay Thirsty had a sore foot that kept him out of the Kentucky Derby. He could also be a sleeper in this field as many have forgotten about him.

Ruler on Ice (25/1) – Ran second last time out in the Federico Tesio at Pimlico. Look for him to travel mid-pack and close down the stretch. At this price, he’s certainly worth a look.

Prime Cut (25/1) – This Alydar Stakes winner is on track for a shot at a Triple Crown race title.

Monzon (35/1) – Has run at Belmont twice, finishing 6th in the Peter Pan (G2) and 3rd in the Gnome’s Gold. I don’t believe this longshot is even worth a look Saturday.

Isn’t He Perfect (45/1) – He didn’t run in the Derby, but finished in 9th at the Preakness. There isn’t a lot to like about this horse as he has never finished in the money in four graded stakes races.
