Pre-Race Odds/Payouts:

The first two legs of the Triple Crown were won by longshots. Animal Kingdom (21/1) took down the Kentucky Derby and Shackleford (13/1) proved victorious at the Preakness Stakes. A $2 win wager on Animal Kingdom profited bettors $42, while a $2 win bet on Shackleford netted $26. Will it be another longshot to take down the Belmont Stakes? If so, there will be another big payout on Saturday, June 11th.

I’m going to preview each contender in the field for the Belmont. I list their career record as well as how much you would profit from a $2 win wager on every horse. If you really want to look for a big payout, then an Exacta or a Trifecta wager would be right up your alley. These are much tougher to predict, but as a result the payouts are huge for successful Exacta and Trifecta bets. Here is a look at how much money you can expect to make with a correct “win” wager on the horse of your choice.

Animal Kingdom (3/1) – Has never finished outside of second-place, posting a 6-3-3-0 career record. A $2 wager on Animal Kingdom would profit you $6.

Nehro (9/2) – Missed the money in his first two starts, but hasn’t finished outside of second of the last four. Nehro owns a 6-1-3-0 career record and is primed for a big run after passing up the Preakness. A $2 wager would net you $9 if this horse were to win.

Shackleford (5/1) – The winner of the Preakness Stakes, Shackleford owns a 7-3-1-0 career record. Many believe the distance in Belmont will be too much for him. A $2 win bet would pocket you $10 in profits.

Master of Hounds (10/1) – Has only raced four times with a 4-0-1-1 record, but a promising fifth-place finish in the Derby has bettors hopeful Master of Hounds can win his first race Saturday. A $2 wager would profit you $20.

Mucho Macho Man (15/1) – The most proven horse in the field, Mucho Macho Man sports a 10-2-3-3 career record. He has only missed the money twice as you can see, and one of those efforts came in the Preakness when he lost a shoe out of the gate. A successful $2 win wager nets you $30.

Santiva (15/1) – Found the board in his first five races before poor showings his last two times out at the Blue Grass Stakes (9th) and in the Kentucky Derby (6th). Owns a 7-1-3-1 career record and hopes to rebound Saturday. A correct $2 win wager puts $30 in your pockets.

Brilliant Speed (20/1) – This is one of the more experienced horses in the field with a 9-2-1-3 record. He ran seventh in the Kentucky Derby though, tying his worst-ever finish. A $2 win bet would bring back $40 in profits.

Stay Thirsty (22/1) – This horse has been falling fast, but owns a 7-2-2-0 career record. What’s concerning is a seventh-place finish in the Florida Derby and a 12th in the Kentucky Derby, which were his two most recent races. A $2 win bet on Stay Thirsty would net you $44.

Ruler on Ice (25/1) – This is one sleeper to keep your eye one with a 5-1-2-1 career mark. He hasn’t been tested against the best of fields, though. A successful $2 win wager yields $50 in profits.

Prime Cut (25/1) – With an impressive 7-2-2-2 career record, Prime Cut is certainly worth a look. But like Ruler on Ice, he hasn’t had a lot of competition. A correct $2 win bet makes you $50 richer.

Monzon (35/1) – He has never finished worse than sixth in any race, but Monzon’s 7-2-0-1 career record is little to be desired. He hasn’t finished better than fifth in any graded stakes race, going 0-for-3 in three tries. That’s why he’s a longshot at 35-to-1 which means a $2 wager gets you $70 in profits for a win.

Isn’t He Perfect (45/1) – After finishing out of the money in all four of his graded stakes races, Isn’t He Perfect isn’t likely to put up much of a fight Saturday. He is the most experienced horse in the field with a 13-2-0-1 record, but unfortunately most of that experience has resulted in disappointment. If he can upset the field then a $2 win wager would make you $90 in profits.
