2011 Belmont Stakes Picks
Written by Jack Jones - Google +
The Belmont Stakes is just around the corner which means it’s time to start making your picks on which horse will win. This is the third leg of the Triple Crown and even though different horses won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, there is still money to be made. This event takes place in Belmont, New York on Saturday, June 11th. It will be nationally televised on NBC so you’ll be able to tune in and see if your tickets cash.
Before making your picks, be sure to not leave any stone unturned. That means you must first put in the necessary research it takes to handicap this race and find out as much as you can about each contender. You must also look at the odds for each horse to find the best value. There has been two solid payouts thus far in the Triple Crown hunt with Animal Kingdom taking down the Derby at 21-to-1 while Shackleford won the Preakness at 13-to-1. I was fortunate enough to have picked the Preakness correctly as I had Shackleford coming out on top.
I’m going to give my Belmont Stakes predictions on which horses I believe will place first, second and third on race day. I’ll also throw in a few sleepers that may be worth a look outside my top three. Feel free to use these picks to compare them to what you are thinking, and good luck to you if you decide to bet them exactly the same way that I am. Without further ado, here are my picks for Saturday.
Win: Animal Kingdom (3/1) - This horse has proven to be very versatile in six career starts. He has shown he can run for speed, stalk and close which is a rare attribute for any racing horse. Animal Kingdom has not placed outside of second in his six lifetime starts and has easily been the best horse thus far in the Triple Crown races. He won the Kentucky Derby by 2 ¾ lengths after closing hard, and nearly won the Preakness but fell short by ½ a length to Shackleford. I believe the added distance at the Belmont will only help his chances.
Place: Mucho Macho Man (15/1) – This horse just seems to find the money every time he hits the track. Mucho Macho Man has placed in the top three in eight of 10 career starts. He only managed 6th at the Preakness after finishing third in the Derby, but a lost shoe out of the gate gives him a pass at Pimlico. He has shown the heart it takes to push through the last ½ mile in Belmont.
Show: Nehro (9/2) – A second-place finish in the Derby marked the third straight runner-up showing for Nehro. He is rested up after skipping the Preakness, meaning he’ll be fresh in hopes of trying to break this recent streak of runner-up finishes. Nehro has placed in the top two in four straight races now, and there’s no question he’ll be giving Animal Kingdom and Mucho Macho Man a run for their money Saturday.
Top 3 Potential Sleepers:
Brilliant Speed (20/1)
Stay Thirsty (22/1)
Ruler on Ice (25/1)
