Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns NFL Spread

Written October 3, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Cincinnati Bengals may finally be getting things turned around, but thus far the Cleveland Browns have looked like the laughing stock of the NFL. The Bengals enter this in-state rivalry with a 2-1 record, while the Browns come in at 0-3. The Browns quarterback position is in a state of flux at this point, but it seems that no matter what quarterback plays the offense has serious problems.

The Cincinnati Bengals are a miraculous last second catch by Brandon Stokley of the Broncos away from being 3-0. Last weekend the Bengals pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 23-20. What has improved so much for the Bengals from last year and their terrible 4-11-1 mark? Number one is that the Bengals now have a healthy Carson Palmer, which completely changes their offensive capabilities and gives them many more weapons. On the defensive side of the ball the Bengals have made great strides as well. Antwaan Odom had five sacks in one game earlier this year, and the defense is pressuring the quarterback much better than it did last season. The linebackers are quick and are solid tacklers. Overall, the Bengals are definitely a different team than they were last season.

The Cleveland Browns have been downright terrible in their first three games of the season. The Browns actually led the Vikings at halftime of their first game, and ever since then it has been all downhill. The offense has been anemic, averaging just 9.7 points per game. The defense has allowed 31.7 points per game. The team hasn’t been able to run the ball at all, and they haven’t been able to stop the run either. Brady Quinn wasn’t impressive at all so now it will be Derek Anderson under center, but Anderson hasn’t shown anything to be very optimistic about either. The Browns clearly need to get the passing attack going and get the ball in the hands of Braylon Edwards, but thus far it hasn’t happened.

The Bengals opened as 3.5 point favorites in this game, but the line has moved quickly in favor of the Bengals. The Bengals are now favored by 6 points according to the latest NFL lines . The Browns will be at home, but that hasn’t been enough to get the money coming in on the Browns at all.

The Bengals are likely to do their best to control the line of scrimmage in this one and establish a running game with Cedric Benson. If the Bengals are successful running the ball some play action deep passes will likely hurt the Browns. The Browns will need to get pressure on Carson Palmer or their secondary will likely have a long afternoon. On offense the Browns need to get some semblance of a rushing attack going, and they need to take care of the football. As a team that has struggled so mightily gaining yards, they have no margin for error when it comes to the turnover margin.

The Cleveland Browns are 1-10-1 against the spread in their last 12 football games so it is next to impossible to recommend the Browns. The Bengals clearly have more talent and should cover the number, though the rivalry factor does make it a little more worrisome. If you are taking a side on this game one would have to think the Bengals are the only side that makes sense.
