Cincinnati Bengals at New York Jets Football Predictions

Written October 9, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Things don’t get any easier this weekend for the winless Cincinnati Bengals (0-5), as they are forced to stay on the road and this week they head to New York to take on Brett Favre and the Jets (2-2). The Bengals had to travel to Dallas last week, and though the played the Cowboys tough, they wound up on the losing end again 22-31. As for the Jets they are coming in off a bye week, where they had plenty of time to enjoy the 56 point outburst in their most recent game against the Cardinals. The oddsmakers are riding the Jets this week, as they come in 6 point favorites over the Bengals at BetUS.com

Though the Bengals haven’t won a game this season, its not like they are playing bad football, as they have really been every game but one this season. Playing both the Giants and the Cowboys down to the wire has to give this some kind of confidence, though its likely hard to have any at this point. Carson Palmer continues to play well this season, and his favorite target remains TJ Houshmandzadeh, who had another big week grabbing 7 catches for 85 yards and 2 scores against Dallas. The question remains just why this team can’t find a way to get Chad Johnson the football, as its hard to believe this guy has dropped off that drastically. Chris Perry remains the featured back, but the addition of Cedric Benson will likely take some carries away from Perry. This unit continues to under achieve, so it could just be a matter of time before things start clicking.

The real surprise this season has been how well the Bengals have played on the defensive side of things, as they have really kept the team in games this season when the offense was unable to get things going. Though it didn’t show up last week the Bengals have really played well against the run, giving up just a little over a 100 yards a game, but where things get bad is in the pass defense. Teams are throwing for more than 250 yards a game on the Bengals secondary, and that doesn’t go well for this team as they get ready to take on Brett Favre this weekend. Bet Bengals +6 at BetUS.com

Speaking of Favre and the Jets offense, they easily had their best performance of the season in their last game, as Favre set a personal record with 6 touchdown passes in a single game. If this is the new look of the Jets this offensive unit could become something many teams don’t want anything to do with. As much as the Jets coaching staff likes the run and to control the game, its just crazy to sign Favre and try and pound out the running game, when you have one of the best passers to ever play the game. With the Bengals really struggling against he pass we look for the Jets to let far loose this weekend, and while we don’t expect another 6 touchdown performance we expect the Jets to put plenty of points on the board.

The Jets defense was solid to start the season giving up just 16.5 points a game in their first two games, but that has changed over the last two games, as they have given up over 41 points a game. The problem with the Jets defense is they too struggle to stop the pass, as they are giving up nearly 237 yards a game, and that could be a problem this weekend when Carson Palmer takes aim on this defense, but they key to this one will be getting pressure on the quarterback, as they forced 7 turnovers and had 5 sacks against the Cardinals.
