Larry Johnson Ready to Play Chiefs
Written December 24, 2009 by Jason Lowry
This Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs will head to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals, and a game that at first glance doesn’t look all that exciting, may have a little extra punch to it. Earlier this season the Chiefs released running back Larry Johnson, and the Bengals in need of a backup for the then injured Cedric Benson, decided that Johnson would be a good fit. At first you might expect Johnson to be ready to take revenge on the Chiefs, but according to John Erardi of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Johnson is downplaying the idea that he is holding a grudge against his former team.
It seems as though the move has benefited both teams, as Johnson has found a new life with the Bengals. In his second game with the Bengals, Johson ran for a 100 yards for the first time this season, but has had a much more limited role in the following weeks. With the departure of Johnson in Kansas City, it has allowed Jamal Charles to show what he has to offer the Chiefs organization, and so far he has been better than expected. Charles is coming off back to back 100 yard performances, and has scored a touchdown in four straight games.
If you look at the NFL spreads for the game this weekend, the Bengals are near two-touchdown favorites against the Chiefs, and that could mean more playing time for Johnson if the Bengals get a comfortable lead. Either way I don’t buy into the fact that Johnson doesn’t have a little bit of a grudge going against the Chiefs, and if I was head coach Marvin Lewis, I would get Johnson the ball early and often.
