Cincinnati Bengals vs. Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Picks & Spread

Written October 16, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Cincinnati Bengals will try to avoid going 0-7 to start the season when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7 action. While the Bengals hold up the bottom of the AFC North the Steelers have risen to the top starting the season 4-1 and are coming off a bye week that was much needed to get some guys back from injury. With these two teams heading in complete opposite directions there is no surprise that the oddsmakers have the Steelers 9.5 point favorites over the Bengals at Bookmaker.com

Having their bye week last week the Steelers were able to avoid another game without star running back Willie Parker who was forced to sit out their last game against Jaguars. While Mewelde Moore stepped in and did a solid job filling in, there is no question the Steelers want Parker back in action, and they should get just that this weekend against the Bengals. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger continues to play with pain, but even with all the pain, he was still able to throw for 309 yards and 3 scores in their last game. Look for the Steelers to ease Parker back in the mix, as the Bengals have the worst pass defense in the league giving up 253 yards a game.

The Steelers defense continues to play well giving up just 272 yards a game, and they really shutdown the Jaguars running game allowing just 38 yards on the ground for a team built on its running game. It wasn’t like Jags were throwing the ball that well either as David Garrard completed just 18 of 32 passes for 200 yards. With the Bengals struggling to do much of anything on offense this season, expect another solid performance out of this unit. Bet Steelers -9.5 at Bookmaker.com

The Bengals offense wasn’t playing good before Carson Palmer got hurt, and the fact that they are going to have to play another game without him doesn’t go well for this team winning its first game of the season. With Palmer still out Ryan Fitzpatrick will get another start and he will try and build off his 152 yard performance last week. Though the Bengals did pretty much nothing on the ground in their last game against the Jets, it had to be a good sign for the passing game as Chad Johnson had his best game of the season catching 5 balls for 57 yards. Don’t expect much out of this unit against the Steelers his weekend, but with the way the defense has played overall we wouldn’t be surprised if they kept it close till the end.

The Bengals have been in pretty much every game this season, and thats because the defense is keeping them from getting blown out. Last week they came in facing Brett Favre and the Jets that threw for 6 touchdowns in their last outing, and surprisingly the Bengals held Favre in check forcing him to throw two interceptions and holding him to just 189 yards through the air. There is no doubt that if the Bengals want to beat anyone its the Steelers, so expect them to come out with a little more intensity than normal. Bet Bengals +9.5 at Bookmaker.com
