Big 12 Football Recap Week 3

Big 12 Football Week 3 RecapSo far, the Big 12 has had one Top-5 team lose in the first two weeks. But Texas avoided becoming the third team to lose in the Top-5 in Week 3, escaping with a lackluster 34-24 home win over Texas Tech. This conference did see it’s share of unimpressive performances this past weekend, but overall it was a decent showing for the Big 12. Oklahoma - The Sooners aren’t missing a beat without Sam Bradford. Landry Jones appears ready to take on the undefeated Miami Hurricanes next week after throwing 6 touchdown passes in a 45-0 win over Tulsa. Those 6 TD’s were a school-record, not bad for a backup QB in this storied program.

Baylor - The Bears shot themselves in the foot in Week 3, just when most thought they had turned the corner this season. Baylor gave up 235 rushing yards to the Connecticut Huskies en route to a 30-22 loss. The Bears have all kinds of weapons on offense, but if they don’t shore up this run defense in a hurry then another empty trip to a postseason game will be the result.

Nebraska - The Huskers had a great opportunity to put their names on the map at Virginia Tech over the weekend, only to watch Tyrod Taylor complete a game-winning touchdown for a 16-15 victory with less than a minute to go. Nebraska also had a touchdown pass called back by a penalty. It was a game of missed opportunities for the Huskers, and a big missed opportunity to get some national attention.

Colorado - The Buffaloes simplified their defensive scheme against Wyoming, and it resulted in their first shutout win in two years. Colorado limited the Cowboys to just 5 plays of more than 10 yards in a much-needed 24-0 victory to pick up their first “W” of the season.

Others - Texas did beat Texas Tech 34-24, but so far the Longhorns have not been as impressive as their No. 2 ranking should indicate. Missouri cruised 52-12 over Furman, but their near-upset loss to Bowling Green is still lingering in the minds of sports bettors. Kansas is an impressive 3-0 after beating Duke 44-16, though coach Mark Mangino has said his team is immature and still has a lot of growing up to do. Texas A&M is undefeated, but a 38-30 home win over Utah State was far from impressive. Oklahoma State won by 17 points over Rice at home, but when you consider the Red Raiders beat the Owls 55-10, it makes the Cowboys’ win that much less significant after losing to Houston last week. K-State is hurting offensively after losing back-to-back road games, including a 9-23 loss at UCLA over the weekend. Iowa State bounced back nicely with a 34-14 win at Kent State, improving to 2-1 this season.
