Big Brown Belmont Odds

Written May 30, 2008 by Jason Lowry

There is plenty to get excited for this years 140th running of the Belmont Stakes, as we get to witness the 27th horse take his shot at racing history and try to become only the 12th horse to win the Triple Crown. Big Brown will be at the center of attention when the race gets underway on Saturday June 7th at Belmont Park in New York. The question buzzing around the racetrack is whether or not Big Brown has what it takes to win the 1.5-mile race and become the first horse in 30 years to win the Triple Crown. After dominating performances at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, one would have to assume he would be able to win yet again, but so did many of the other 16 horses who have failed to do so when given their shot. Big Brown has the best odds in the field to win the race, and only time will tell if he can take home another impressive victory. We figured it would be best to take a look at some of the pros and cons and let you the reader be the one to judge.

Pros

Weak Field: We really think that this horse has had it pretty easy this year, as there just doesn’t seem to be anyone who can run with him. There are a couple new horses in action this week who didn’t race at the first two events and it will be interesting to see if he can add them to his list of victims.

Speed and Power: This horse seems to be able to turn it up a notch when others simply can’t go any faster. This horse is truly one of the most powerful and strongest horses that we have seen in recent years. Some believe we haven’t even seen the best this horse can bring to the table.

Jockey & Trainer: What a combination this duo has been this year, as trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. simply just keeps on winning no matter which horse he has racing. While all the attention is on Big Brown and his runs at the Derby and Preakness, he has two other horses that made a big splash at the World Cup. Jockey Kent Desormeaux is a veteran jockey that knows what it takes to be in this kind of spotlight as he took Real Quiet with in a nose of the winning the Triple Crown back in 1998. Desormeaux isn’t going to let this one slip out of reach again, and will be more prepared than ever to lead Big Brown to victory.

Cons

Distance: Some think that the distance isn’t going to be a big deal for the gifted Big Brown, but we aren’t about to crown him champion just yet. While we do think that he is the best horse on the track, there is a lot that can happen in a long race like this, and it’s a task our eyes have yet to see him complete.

Injury: This might not be to big of a concern come race day, but in the back of your mind you have to wonder if this horse will be a 100% in the race, after suffering a slight crack in his left front hoof. They say he will, but only on race day will he be pushed to the limit for such a great distance. We really hope that this horse isn’t hurt and is able to run the best race he can.

Tired Legs: This is another thing that you just have to take into consideration. This will be the 3rd race in 5 weeks for this horse, and he is the only horse in the field that will have competed in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Its easy to watch this horse and think there is no way he will slow down, but when you look back at history and all the horses that have failed to finish up their run for the Triple Crown with a loss at the Belmont, you just have to hope that he is not one of them.

So is this the year we finally see another horse win the Triple Crown, or will Big Brown be just another horse with a sad finish at the Belmont?
