Big East Teams in the 2009 NCAA Tournament

Written March 17, 2009 by Jack Jones

big-east-ncaa-tournamentCraig Trapp is just one of the millions of people across the world who have caught the March Madness bug as he can hardly contain his excitement.  How many people will be filling out the 2009 NCAA tournament brackets in the hopes of winning their local office pools or contest?  It’s a great time of year no matter if you like watching regular season college basketball or not.  Today Craig is going to help out those who will be betting on the NCAA Tournament by taking a look at the teams from the Big East.  This conference earned three No. 1 seeds and has to be considered the favorite of conferences that will include this year’s champions.  Bet on the tournament at Sports Interaction using your checking account!

Louisville – The top seed in the tournament and it’s easy to see why after the Cardinals won both the regular season title and conference tournament.  Most books have Louisville with college basketball odds around 5/1 to win the tournament, second behind only the Tar Heels from North Carolina.  Craig’s power rankings show this team ranked #3 overall and the Cardinals will be playing in what he thinks is the toughest bracket.

Pittsburgh – With 6/1 odds on the futures market this team is the #1 seed in the East region.  The Panthers were probably in line for the top overall seed before losing in the first round of the Big East tournament.  The loss though could give the Panthers some extra motivation and serve as a wake-up call.  Criag thinks the East is the easiest bracket and with Pitt having the most talent of any of the teams in the conference, they should be in line for a Final Four bid.

Connecticut – The last of the top seeds and with 7/1 odds.  This team was cruising along at No. 1 until the injury to Dyson and their 3-3 record since.  The Huskies playing the second toughest bracket out West with teams like Memphis, Missouri, and Washington to get through.

Syracuse – Craig thinks that the Orange are the best three seed in the tournament and one of the dark horses this year.  If guard play is important then this team should do well because they have three of the best backcourt scorers in the nation.  You might see some nice value at 15/1 if Syracuse can pull off a few more upsets and since they play in the South, North Carolina is the only team they really have to upset to make it out of the region.

Villanova – This is the one team from the Big East that Craig is showing as possibly over-valued with their #3 seed.  Most of the books have the Wildcats at 25/1 to win it all.  Last year this team pulled off a few upsets to make the Sweet 16, but with a weak region this year they will be favored to return.

West Virginia – Coach Huggins’s team is playing well at the right time and this six seed has to scare the rest of the schools in their region.  The fact that they are playing in the toughest bracket make it unlikely they survive enough games to win it all and the 50/1 odds they are getting support that theory.

Marquette – Injury problems have derailed the Golden Eagles and they will be facing some tough matchups as a six seed.  This team is a long shot at 50/1 odds with possible games against Missouri and Memphis on the horizon.

Louisville goes……all…….the…….way…….don’t matter who the final opponent is. They’re the best team in basketball and no other team can touch them this year barring injury.
