Big Ten Football Recap Week 3

Written September 21, 2009 by Black Widow

Big Ten Football Recap Week 3The Big Ten continues to hurt it’s national reputation in big games. They did so again in Week 3 with teams like Minnesota and Michigan State losing to teams that they were underdogs to according to college football odds, but still games they could have won. The conference went 6-4 as a whole for the week, but they didn’t win any games they were supposed to lose, except for maybe Indiana over Akron. Purdue lost at home against Northern Illinois, and Northwestern lost at Syracuse as a favorite. If you feel you have a good grasp on this conference for Week 4, then give college football wagering a shot! Iowa - This is the one team in the Big Ten that has been impressive to this point thanks to their defense. They had a scare in Week 1 against Northern Iowa, but they’ve gone on to beat Iowa State 35-3 on the road and then Arizona 27-17 at home last week. With their defense alone, the Hawkeyes are primed to compete for a Big Ten championship. They simply play the game the right way, with a great defense and a solid running game which gives them a chance to win week in and week out.

Ohio State - Terrelle Pryor needed to play a team like Toledo to get his confidence back, and he didn’t disappoint en route to a 38-0 victory. Pryor threw for a career-high 262 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 110 more and a score. He did have two interceptions, but the Buckeyes’ stingy defense had his back in a shutout.

Penn State - The Nittany Lions need to play somebody before we can really get a good grasp on this team, but they are 3-0 with three dominant performances nonetheless. Evan Royster piled on 134 rushing yards in a 31-6 win against Temple over the weekend. The defense has only allowed 3 combined points in the first half of three games. Exhibition season is over though, and they’ll need a much stronger performance from their offense if they are to get past Iowa next week.

Others - The Spartans and Fighting Illini have to grow up in a hurry. Both were projected to finish in the top half of the Big Ten, but each has a lot left to prove if that’s going to happen. Michigan State is 1-2, and they have games coming up against Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. The Fighting Illini have lost stud linebacker Martez Wilson for the season, and the defense will really be tested with upcoming games against Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan State. Indiana is 3-0 and the Hoosier faithful has to feel good at the direction they are headed in. Purdue has looked great against Toledo and Oregon, but the Boilermakers suffered a big setback with a home loss to Northern Illinois over the weekend and perhaps this team isn’t as improved as they looked through the first two weeks. Michigan avoided a letdown with a 45-17 throttling of Eastern Michigan, improving to 3-0. Northwestern probably should have lost to EMU last week, and they did lose to Syracuse over the weekend after giving up 37 points to a lackluster ‘Cuse offense. Minnesota is still rebuilding, though they fought hard against a good Cal team.  Wisconsin is also 3-0, and they crushed Wofford over the weekend after narrowly escaping with wins over Northern Illinois and Fresno State the two previous weeks.  It will take a road game to see if the Badgers are the real deal or not.
