Big Ten Football Week 2 Recap

Written September 15, 2009 by Black Widow

Big Ten Football Week 2 RecapWe give you a recap of what happened in the Big Ten for Week 2 NCAA football betting. This conference gets a bad rep around the country by continually losing big games, and Ohio State’s home loss to USC didn’t help matters. But there are a few surprise teams emerging early as possible contenders to win this conference, teams such as Purdue, Iowa and Michigan. If you are going to try and beat the college football lines for Week 3, then do it with $500 free cash from BetUS! Michigan - The Wolverines appear to be back, and head coach Rich Rodriquez found himself a quarterback in Tate Forcier to run the show. This kid was cool under pressure in a 38-34 victory over Notre Dame, completing 6-of-7 passes for 56 yards on the game-winning drive which ended in a touchdown pass to Greg Mathews with only 11 seconds remaining. Forcier also ran in a 31-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play. Michigan is officially a contender in the Big Ten this season after last year’s 3-9 debacle.

Ohio State - The Buckeyes may have lost to USC 18-15, but Ohio State proved they are much better than they got credit for after last week’s near-upset at the hands of Navy. Their defense stymied the Trojans’ offense for 57 minutes, with a lapse on the game’s decisive drive by USC being their only blemish. Too often Ohio State has to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns in the red zone, so their offense needs to have a few playmakers step up to help out QB Terrelle Pryor and the defense.

Purdue - The Boilermakers 52-31 win over Toledo in Week 1 had several question marks surrounding it. Is Toledo that bad? Or has Purdue improved from a year ago? Well, after a near-upset of Oregon on the road in a 38-36 loss in Week 2, it’s clear that the Boilermakers are the real deal. Running back Ralph Bolden is the next star tailback in the Big Ten, rushing for 357 yards and 4 touchdowns through two games. QB Joey Elliot isn’t as big of a drop-off from Curtis Painter as folks thought he would be, throwing for 486 yards and 4 touchdowns in two games.

Wisconsin - The Badgers have squeaked out two wins early, but they came against two bowl teams from a year ago in Northern Illinois and Fresno State. Still, the Badgers had the luxury of playing their first two games at Camp Randall, and it’s inevitable that they’ll struggle the first time they hit the road.

Others - Michigan State is feeling the losses of Hoyer and Ringer offensively, not being able to finish out games. The Spartans lost 29-27 to Central Michigan, a team from the MAC, which also hurt the Big Ten’s perception. Northwestern beat Eastern Michigan 27-24, another unimpressive victory. Penn State didn’t allow any first half points to Syracuse, the second straight week they’ve done that. The Nittany Lions will win and die by their defense this year, because the offense isn’t as explosive as it appeared it would be heading into the year. After escaping with a home win over UNI in Week 1, the Iowa Hawkeyes bounced back nicely with a 35-3 road win at Iowa State to get back in the discussion. Illinois put away in-state foe Illinois State 45-17, no shocker but a much-needed win nonetheless. Indiana has quietly started 2-0, and no matter who they’ve played it’s a big win for Hoosier fans.
