Big Ten Football Week 4 Recap
Written September 30, 2009 by Black Widow
We’ll take a look at the Big Ten with a recap off what took place in Week 4. The Hawkeyes got the best of the Nittany Lions, again, to basically destroy their season in a crushing defeat for Penn State football. Ohio State pitched their second shutout in as many weeks, taking the upper-hand as far as the conference title is concerned. Penn State - The Nittany Lions could not afford to lose to Iowa for a second straight year, and this time they got them in Happy Valley. But Penn State faltered in the fourth quarter again, and Iowa took advantage with a 21-10 road victory.
Iowa - The Hawkeyes are now a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. Their defense ranks up there with that of Ohio State, and now if the offense can find consistency in the passing game Iowa has a great shot to win the conference.
Ohio State - The Buckeyes recorded their second straight shutout, beating Illinois 30-0. That’s a pretty impressive feat considering all the weapons the Illini have offensively, and how explosive Todelo’s offense was coming into last week. Terrelle Pryor needs to continue to improve, and throwing for just 82 yards last Sunday was a big step backwards.
Michigan - The Wolverines are undefeated, but it didn’t come without a dramatic finish against then-unbeaten Indiana. Tate Forcier rushed and threw for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead the Wolverines to another come-from behind victory. No matter how you spin it, Michigan is back after a 4-0 start and a Top-25 ranking.
Others - Indiana is one of the most improved teams in the country, and they are just a play or two from being undefeated after their 33-36 loss to Michigan. Minnesota is 3-1 with their only loss to Cal after beating Northwestern on the road 35-24 with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Wisconsin is quietly 4-0 with another hard-fought 38-30 win at home over Michigan State. The Badgers have yet to hit the road, and until they do we won’t really know how good this team is. Purdue lost another heartbreaker, 21-24 to Notre Dame, and the Boilermakers are just a few plays away from being undefeated as well, instead they are 1-3. Both the Spartans and Illini were supposed to contend in the Big Ten this year, but after each has started 1-3 and 1-2, respectively, both have some work to do if they are to even make a bowl game.
