2010 BMW Championship Predictions

Last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship, Carley Hoffman posted a 9-under 62 to run away with his first win on Tour since the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. With the win Hoffman moved to second in the FedEX points standings behind Matt Kucar, who won the first playoff of the season at the Barclays.

This week the PGA Tour moves into third installment of the playoff system, as the top 70 golfers in the FedEX points standings are invited to take aim at the 2010 BMW Championship at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club. After the finish to this week’s event the field will be trimmed down to the top 30 golfers for the final stop at the Tour Championship.

All eyes will this weekend will be on the defending champ and two time winner of this event, Tiger Woods, who is in desperate need of a strong finish or he could be eliminated from the field, as he currently sits in 51st place in the points standings. Tiger won this event by a eight-strokes in 2009, as he shot a 19-under 265.

For those of you looking to place a bet on who will win the tournament this weekend, here is a look at the the three golfers I feel have the best shot at coming away with a win this weekend.

Tiger Woods: Tiger has struggled to play well at courses he has excelled at over his career this season, and Cog Hill is another course on the list that many expect him to at least finish in the top 10 if not win. Woods has won five times throughout his career at Cog Hill, and I think this is the week he snaps out of his funk and grabs his first win of the season. After a slow start to the Deutsche Bank Championship, Tiger was able to fight back and finish tied for 11th. I look for four solid rounds out of Woods this weekend, as I just can’t imagine he is going to fail to perform and miss out on the chance to play at the Tour Championship.

Matt Kuchar: What a finish Kuchar is putting together. Kuchar backed up his win at the Barclays with a nice showing at the Deutsche Bank Championship, as he also finished tied for 11th. Kuchar has now finished in the top 10 in seven of his last nine events, including each of his last four starts. Simply put there is no one playing better golf than Matt right now, and I think he will be right there with Woods on Sunday when the tournament comes to a close.

Camilo Villegas: If you are looking for a sleeper this weekend to really give you a shot to make some money, I think you have to go with 2008 champ Camilo Villegas, who also had a strong showing here last year finishing tied for 8th and in 2007 where he finished tied for 7th. Forget how bad he has played in the first two tournaments of the playoff system, as this is simply a course he knows and a course that really seems to fit his game.
