Boise State 2009 Football Predictions
Written July 14, 2009 by InfoPlays
Chris Petersen has led the Boise State Broncos to a 35-4 record in his three years on the job, including a 12-1 campaign in 2008. That one loss was a 16-17 setback to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl, falling 1-point short of a perfect season. The Broncos will set the tone in the ‘09 opener at home against Oregon. A victory there would put Boise in the driver’s seat as the frontrunner to crash the BCS. Lose, and they are still the favorites to win their seventh WAC title in the last eight years. The lines on both sides of the ball will be the determining factor, which were exposed in that loss to the Horned Frogs. Offense: Most of the offense returns to a unit that scored 49 points/game in their final five regular season contests. Sophomore quarterback Kellen Moore is the leader of the group, who earned WAC Freshamn of the Year honors and set a school record by completing 69.4 percent of his passes. Junior wide receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young offer a pair of proven receivers on the outside. Pettis can jump through the roof which makes him a difficult cover in the red zone. Young is the speedster, but he missed 10 games last season due to suspension and was sorely missed as a deep threat.
The Broncos hope to get the running game going this year after averaging 152.3 yards/game last season, which is a small number by their standards. Junior tailbacks D.J. Harper and Jeremy Avery provide big-play speed and every-down toughness. Avery has been the change-up back the past two seasons to Ian Johnson, averaging 6.0 yards/carry. The offensive line was a weakness of this unit last season, but they expect improvement here with the return of three starters and three others with starting experience. Sophomore center Thomas Byrd is a top candidate for All-WAC honors, but the rest of the line remains a work in progress.

Defense: The defense stepped up big in ‘08, allowing just 12.6 points and 308.2 yards/game while forcing 33 turnovers. But a tough finish to their season in the Poinsettia Bowl where they allowed 275 rushing yards to TCU shows there is plenty of room for improvement. The defense has the potential to be better this year, even with just five returning starters. Several more players with quality experience and bigger upsides will be replacing the departed. For example, the only returning starter on the line is All-WAC end Ryan Winterswyk who recorded 11.5 tackles for loss last season. He’s joined by Freshman All-American tackle Billy Winn who had 5.5 tackles for loss, sophomore end Byron Hout who had four sacks and an interception in the bowl loss, and sophomore tackle Chase Baker who was a spring standout.
Two starting spots are wide open at linebacker. Hunter White separated himself from a group that includes former starter Derrell Acrey, walk-on J.C. Percy and junior college transfer Daron Mackey, who is recovering from a knee injury. Senior cornerback Kyle Wilson is the standout in the secondary, who decided to return to finish school and improve his NFL stock. Also returning as starters are safeties Jeron Johnson and George Iloka, along with cornerback Brandyn Thompson, and none is a senior so the future is bright. The opening in the secondary is at nickel, which has become a full-time role in this scheme. Former tailback Doug Martin enters the fall as the leading candidate.
