Boise State at Fresno State Odds & Predictions
Written September 16, 2009 by Anthony Moretti
The Boise State Broncos play their first road game of the season this Friday at the Fresno State Bulldogs. The college football odds for the game have already been posted, and they show Boise State as 7.5 point favorites with the over/under being set at 54 points.
Boise State is now ranked #10 in the entire nation after an impressive win over a nationally-ranked Oregon team, followed by an easy win over Miami-Ohio last week, which just so happened to be their 51st-straight regular season win at home. This week the Broncos take to the road, to face a Fresno State team that might be the Broncos toughest opponent to date when you factor in home field advantage. Fresno dominated in week one, destroying UC-Davis by a final of 51-0, but came up just short in week two at Wisconsin, losing 31-34 in double overtime. The bad news for the Bulldogs is that Boise State is 7-4 against them since the series started in 1977, including last season’s 61-10 Boise State blowout victory.
This Boise State team looks poised for another dominant year over the WAC, but they are also certainly in contention to be a BCS Bowl team. The Broncos have been equally impressive on both offense and defense. They average 33.5 point per game on 401 yards of total offense, while allowing an average of 4 point per game on 173 yards of offense against. It’s pretty easy to win games when you can put up numbers like that. It could be a very different story with the Broncos playing on the road this week, but all indications are that this group will again put up some of the most impressive numbers in the nation.
Fresno State comes off of a solid effort at Wisconsin. The Bulldogs most impressive numbers are on the offensive side of the ball, where they have averaged 41 points and 489 yards of offense per game, though those numbers are certainly more padded than Boise’s, considering UC Davis was on the schedule. The same might be said of the defense, which allowed 0 points against UC Davis, but 34 points against Wisconsin, making their two-game average of 17 points per game hold little water heading into this week’s match up.
Boise has consistently been one of the best teams in the nation against the spread over the last 3 years are so, and they still aren’t getting much respect. According to this line, the Broncos would be about a 13 point favorite over Fresno State if this game were at Boise. Keep in mind this is a team they beat 61-10 last year. While expecting a blowout like that this year is setting yourself up for disappointment, there is no reason this year’s Boise team can’t beat their year’s Fresno team by 3 touchdowns or more.
Final Score Prediction: Boise State 38, Fresno State 17
