Boise State at Hawaii College Football Lines

Written October 23, 2009 by Hector Garza

While Hawaii and Boise State have electrified audiences in the past with some thrilling contests, this week’s game doesn’t look to promise the same. Boise State enters this WAC matchup at 6-0 and Hawaii is a disappointing 2-4 and a 25 point underdog according to the college football betting odds. The night game will start at 11:05 p.m. ET at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii, and the total is set for 57 ½ points.

The Broncos have been on a roll despite a close 28-21 win last week against Tulsa. After opening the year with a 19-8 win against then #16 Oregon, the offense has ripped off another 5 wins against mediocre teams. QB Kellen Moore leads the nation in pass efficiency with 16 td’s to only 2 ints for over 1400 yards. In addition, they’ve racked up over 175 ypg rushing the ball. The offense can be sharper, but is still first in the conference in scoring at 38.2 ppg (7th in the nation) while averaging 429.5 ypg.

In its closest victory of the year (7 points), Boise State held Tulsa to 88 yards rushing but gave up 3 td’s in the air. Despite giving up 21 points, the stop unit is leading the conference at 15.5 ppg and also in yards allowed at 277.8 ypg. The majority of those numbers have come against average opponents, which could bode well for a Hawaii offense that has thrown for over 300 yards in 5 of the 6 games thus far.  If you are ready to get serious about college football betting, get started out with an edge by using the $500 match bonus from BetUS.

Hawaii is ranked 117th in the nation in rushing at 71.8 ypg, which could be a contributing factor to its 4 losses. The passing game, however, is what we call strong. Since starting QB Greg Alexander went down with a season ending knee injury, backup Bryant Moniz has picked up the slack throwing for 283 and 360 yards in his last two starts. They have 3 receivers with over 31 receptions a piece, and WR Greg Salas leads them all at 131.8 ypg and 5 td’s. The offense can score and put up points, and is 15th nationally putting up 443.2 ypg.

Defensively the Warriors have been plain bad. In the last three games Hawaii has given up 352, 277 and 192 yards rushing for 11 td’s. Last week against Idaho they gave up 226 yards and one touchdown in the air on only 14 completions in a 23-35 loss. Their inability to stop the run and the pass has allowed their opponents to average over 26 ppg, forcing the offense to come through for victories, and not enough of them.

Despite being undefeated, the Broncos need to improve in their red zone efficiency if they are to win games against good teams. They’ve scored td’s less than 60% of the time and have come away with nothing 6 times. Even if Hawaii can put up 14-27 points against this solid defense, Boise State should be able to pound the ball against this team to go 7-0. The Broncos lead the series 7-3, and while they man not cover the 25 points spread, they do know how to beat the one-sided Warriors.
