Boston College at Clemson Odds & Picks
Written September 16, 2009 by Riley Martin
Another big ACC matchup in week three as Boston College comes to Death Valley to take on the Clemson Tigers. Both teams are pretty healthy and the game has a 12:00pm kickoff. BC comes in with a 2-0 record and Clemson stands at 1-1 with a tough loss at Georgia Tech last Thursday night. Regardless of records though, oddsmakers currently have the Tigers as 6-point favorites at home. In recent years, Boston College has been nothing but trouble for the Tigers, but with a new coach and a new found poise, this year could be different. Lets go over both sides before we make a prediction. The college football odds for this game have been posted as Clemson -7 over Boston College, with an over/under set at 44.5 points.
Boston College is sitting pretty right now with a 2-0 record to start the season but wins against Northeastern and Kent State aren’t too impressive. This leaves somewhat of a question mark for other teams evaluating BC because no one exactly knows how they are going to match up with bigger and stronger teams. BC also lost their coach from the past two seasons, Jeff Jegodzinski, which brings another question mark for this year. However, since 2005, when BC joined the ACC, they are yet to finish with anything less than 9 wins. This team is consistently good, even as they continue to lose players like Matt Ryan two years ago and Chris Crane, Dominique Davis, and B.J. Raji last year. Judging off their first two games they seem to be pretty solid this year too. However, one key difference between this year’s team and their past is that they’re going to have to rely more on their rushing attack to get the offense going, rather than their passing. On the other hand, the defense should still remain around the top of the ACC. They lost two big defensive tackles and senior Mark Herzlich to cancer, but everyone else returns. Clemson enters week 3 with a 1-1 after losing a close game to Georgia Tech in week two. One thing is for sure though. Clemson will come into this game with a strong will to win. Last week in Atlanta they had overcome a 24-point deficit to finally take a lead, then fell to a field goal in the remaining couple of minutes in the game. Clemson lost players like star receiver Aaron Kelly and quarterback Cullen Harper from last year, but they do bring back maybe their most valuable player in CJ Spiller. If you haven’t seen this guy play, you need too. He is the ACC special teams player of the week just about every week and possibly the top back in the conference along with Dwyer from Georgia Tech. With the departure of Tommy Bowden also brought a lot of coaching changes. The hiring of coach Dabo Swinney, offensive line coach Dan Brooks from Tennessee, and new Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele from Alabama. Therefore, these changes seem to be for the better. One reason is because talent has never been the problem for Clemson. Its been consistency and flakiness. So we will see if these coaches can keep the consistency and attitude to win going or not, but based off of their last game, I think they will.
As for the matchup breakdown, since 2005, Boston College is 2-1-1 against the spread versus Clemson. Every game seems to be close between these two teams as well as every game in the past four years has been within 6 points. However, this is a new Boston College team and a brand spanking new Clemson team. Both teams bring in new coaches and quarterbacks, so these stats don’t really mean too much. That’s why we’re going “All in” with Dabo’s crew at Death Valley this weekend. The tigers have too much ground to gain after last week’s devastating loss. Plus, they already have a head start on in conference play. The bottom line is that Clemson is ready to bounce back and Death Valley is especially difficult to play in. Take the points on the Tigers.
Predicted Score: Boston College 17, Clemson 28
Riley’s Pick: Clemson -7
