Boston College at Duke

This Saturday the Boston College Eagles will go on the road to take on the Duke Blue Devils, as both teams look for their third consecutive win. The Eagles went on the road and beat Wake Forest 23-13 last week, while the Blue Devils snapped a four game conference losing streak with a 55-48 win over Virginia. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend the current odds have the Eagles favored by 3.5-points over the Blue Devils.
Boston College (4-5, 2-4 ACC): For the second straight week the Eagles defense really shined. After allowing just 10 points to Clemson in the previous game, the Eagles allowed just 13 to Wake Forest, and the offense continues to do just enough to get the win. The defense forced five turnovers against the Demon Deacons last week, and running back Montel Harris led the way offensively with 183 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries.
Quarterback Chase Rettig continued to struggling throwing the ball, finishing with just 133 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. In the last three games Rettig has just two touchdowns to five interceptions, and even though the Eagles go up against one of the worst pass defenses in the country this week, Rettig is unlikely to have a big day.
I look for Boston College to use the same game plan that they used against Wake Forest, run the ball and count on the defense to make plays. The Eagles secondary figures to get a lot of work this week, as Duke really focuses on the passing game when it has the ball, so if the defense doesn’t make plays they could be in trouble.
Duke (3-6, 1-4 ACC): Duke comes into the game this weekend averaging just 133 yards a game on the ground, and that total got a big boost after the Blue Devils rushed for 230 yards against Virginia last week. Desmond Scott led the way with 97 yards and a touchdown, and Brandon Connette added another 78 yards and two scores, as the Blue Devils cruised up and down the field.
Quarterback Sean Renfree completed 17 of 29 for 219 yards and a touchdown, and really didn’t need to do much with the ground game working so well. The Eagles however come in ranked third in the country allowing just 82 yards rushing a game, so it will more than likely be up to Renfree to lead the Blue Devils to a win this week.
Defensively the Blue Devils have had trouble stopping just about anyone this season, and if it wasn’t for the Cavaliers turning it over three times last week, they likely would have lost. Virginia racked up 643 yards of total offense, including 226 on the ground. Duke hasn’t kept an opponent under 20 points all season, and only twice have they kept them under 30 points.
Looking at the Odds: I think you have to take the Eagles to cover the 3.5 point spread in this game. While Duke should have some success throwing the ball, the Eagles defense is going to make a lot more stops than the Blue Devils will when they are on defense. While Duke lit up the scoreboard last week, they have actually struggled against good defenses this season, and have held under 21 points in three conference games this season. My final score prediction is Boston College 34, Duke 23.
Got something to say?
