Boston College Football Predictions 2009
Written June 26, 2009 by InfoPlays
With inexperience at the all-important quarterback positions, the Boston College Eagles will need to run the ball effectively early. Defensively, the Eagles will have a much tougher time stopping the run than they did a year ago after losing two defensive tackles to the draft. Last year, the front seven picked up a young secondary. In 2009, it might be time for the secondary to return the favor. NCAA football odds show Boston College listed at +8000 to win the ACC Conference, the biggest underdog to accomplish this feat.
Offense: The Eagles are still looking to settle on a starting quarterback. Sophomore Dominique Davis, after starting three games in place of the injured Chris Crane last year, was considered the leading candidate. But he has now  left the program for academic reasons. Davis had a very poor spring showing anyway. The main competitors for the QB positions are redshirt freshman Justin Tuggle and senior Cody Boek, but neither have taken a snap at the college level. Boek spent some time at fullback for BC in his first year after transferring from junior college, but lack of depth at quarterback put him back at his desired position. It is also noteworthy that David Shinskie, a former high school star quarterback from Pennsylvania who spent the past six years playing minor league baseball, has committed to Boston College to pursue football and a degree.
In contrast to the offense of former coordinator Steve Logan, Tranquill’s attack will be more pro style rather than the spread attack. That leaves Boston College starting a bit from scratch once again. If nothing else, the Eagles should be able to rely on a solid ground game. Expect the offensive line to incorporate more traditional blocking schemes for a very good tandem of backs in true sophomores Josh Haden and Montel Harris.

Defense: It will be tough to replace 700 pounds of run-stuffing beef in the middle of the line. The departure of tackles B.J. Raji and Ron Brace to the NFL is every bit as much cause for concern as the departure of QB Matt Ryan was after the previous season. The tackle spots will belong to junior Damik Scafe and sophomore Kaleb Ramsey. Scafe played a fair amount the past two years, showing off a good motor. Ramsey saw some limited time at the end of last year.
The linebacking corps features the team’s likely MVP, Mark Herzlich, who is the national top-rated outside linebacker. But the Eagles suffered a big loss prior to spring drills when middle linebacker and defensive captain Mike McLaughlin tore his Achilles’ tendon. Recover time is expected to be about five months, which could have him ready for the season-opener. The secondary should be one of the team strengths this season after being a weakness a year ago. Wes Davis and Marcellus Bowman are solid safeties. At the corners are improving senior Roderick Rollins and sophomore Donnie Fletcher, who played well for a freshman.

Besides getting the name of the BC mascot wrong, this column, which is datelined as “Written June 26, 2009 by InfoPlays” seems to have missed the fact that Dominique Davis who you say “is considered the leading candidate” for QB, left Boston College for academic reasons several weeks ago.
You also missed the three-week old news that Boston College received a commitment from 25-year-old quarterback David Shinskie, a former star at Mount Carmel High School in Pennsylvania who spent the past six years playing minor league baseball. “I didn’t think that my career is over in sports,” Shinskie said. “I figured I have four years of eligibility left. I may as well go to a good school and get an education and play football at the same time.
